Eagles get big break in victory
MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 23, 1994 – With two of Orange County's top teams in 1993 still looking for a victory this season, a lucky break was what both Santa Margarita and Huntington Beach needed Friday night.
And just before halftime, Santa Margarita produced a disputed break that propelled the Eagles to a 17-7 non-league victory at Saddleback College.
The Eagles (1-2) headed into the locker room with that 10-point lead after cornerback David Munoz returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown with six seconds left in the second quarter. The pass from Huntington Beach quarterback David Yadrick appeared to bounce off the ground from beneath a diving Oiler receiver and up to Munoz.
“I thought it hit the ground, but I didn't see it because he (the receiver) was in front of me," Munoz said.
Huntington Beach (0-3) had trouble with turnovers throughout the game, committing five. Santa Margarita intercepted four passes, including two each by Munoz and Brian Griffin.
The Eagles had their own problems holding on to the ball, losing three fumbles. Junior Kevin McNeil, the third quarterback to start in as many games, fumbled four times, losing two. But McNeil, a transfer from New Mexico who started for the junior varsity a week ago, threw a 63yard touchdown pass to Griffin for a 7-0 lead.
"They told me after the game last Saturday that I was going to start," McNeil said. "It was driving me crazy all week.”
Oilers coach George Pascoe could say the same. Huntington Beach answered with a 78-yard touchdown pass from Yadrick to Billy Campbell two plays after the Eagles' score. A blocked field goal set up Santa Margarita's first touchdown, though.
