John McGrory Awarded "Zug Cup"
John McGrory was named this year’s recipient of the Zug Cup. The First Friday Friars, a Catholic men’s organization, presents the award to an Orange County Catholic high school senior football player who excels in football, academics and community service.

McGrory & Pierson Enshrined in Scholar Athlete Hall of Fame
Seniors Johnny McGrory and Mack Pierson were honored by the National Football Foundation as Scholar Athletes. The nominees must have received outstanding recognition in his league by the sportswriters and coaches, a First Team All League/Conference selection as well as scholastic average of 3.3 to receive consideration for this top award. These two Eagles will now have their name on permanent display in the National Hall of Fame in South Bend for receiving this NFF scholar/athlete award.

Santa Margarita Eagles Football2 Eagles to play in the OC All-Star Game
OL Cole Luther, and DL Mack Pierson were chosen to play for the South Team in the annual Orange County All-Star Game. The game annually features the top 72 graduated football players in Orange County.

Sr. OL Max Tuerk, Sr. K John McGrory, Jr. QB Johnny Stanton, and Jr. RB Ryan Wolpin, and Jr. OL Riley Sorenson were 1st Team Offense. Sr. DL Chris Frost, and Jr. DB Connor O'Brien were 1st Team Defense. Jr. OL Dane Crane was named 2nd Team Offense. Sr. DL Mack Pierson, and Sr. LB Matt Andersen were named 3rd Team Defense.

Santa Margarita Eagles FootballCIF Champs SMCHS Eagles praised by City Council
On Wednesday, team members filled Rancho Santa Margarita City Hall waiting to be recognized by the City Council. The council presented certificates of recognition to all players and coaches. Mayor Tony Beall said the school’s accomplishment sets an excellent example for the community. Organized youth sports are an integral part of the social fabric and daily life for thousands of residents, he said. The city is very supportive of these sports programs because they bring families together and teach participants many important life lessons, he added.

Stanton Named Cal-Hi Sports MVP
Jr QB Johnny Stanton was named the 2011 CIF State Championship Bowl MVP by Cal-Hi Sports. Johnny was 14 of 25 for 306 yards and four TDs and he had two TD runs to help the Eagles rally from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Bellarmine of San Jose, 42-37.

Eagles Soar
The Eagles made history as they soared to CIF and state championship wins during the 2011 football season. Despite finishing second in the arduous Trinity League, the Eagles caught fire as they entered the playoffs and rode that wave all the way to the state championship game, ultimately earning the team a Top 25 national ranking.

Jr QB Johnny Stanton was 14 of 25 for 306 yards and fou passing TDs and two TD runs to help the Eagles rally from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Bellarmine of San Jose, 42-37. Stanton's 1-yard TD run with 16 seconds left gave the Eagles their second state championship in school history.

Eagles earn CIF State bowl berth
Santa Margarita will face Bellarmine Prep of San Jose in the CIF State Division I bowl game, Friday at 8 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. Santa Margarita earned the berth by defeating San Clemente, 27-13 in the Pac-5 final Saturday night at Angel Stadium. That was the first title for the Eagles since 1997.

Welch Named SOCAL NFL High School Coach of the Year
Head Football Coach Harry Welch was selected as the 2011 ABC7 NFL High School Coach of the Year. Welch will be honored on ABC's Sports Zone show on Saturday, December 3 following the ABC College Football Game of the Week. (between 8:30-10 p.m.) Sports reporter Rob Fukuzaki will present Welch with the award live from the ABC7 studios.

The Eagles (10-2) beat the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits (10-2) in the Second Round of the CIF-SS Pac 5 Playoffs at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The Eagles scored the final 28 points on their way to the 49-16 second round road victory over the third-seeded Jackrabbits.

The Eagles (9-2) beat the Bishop Amat Lancers (6-5) in the First Round of the CIF-SS Pac 5 Playoffs at Saddleback College. RB Alex Suchesk rushed 14 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns. QB Johnny Stanton threw for 188 yards on 16-of-23 passing one touchdown and rushed for another, totaling 263 yards in total offense. The game is also the Cox3 game of the week. Offensive lineman Max Tuerk was selected to play in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He received his jersey in a ceremony at school earlier this week. The game is Jan. 7, 2012 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Head coach Harry Welch took over the Santa Margarita Catholic High School football program coming off back-to-back losing seasons and now has the Eagles ranked fourth in the state in his second year.

The Eagles came up short vs Servite giving up the two point conversion in overtime. QB Johnny Stanton was 20 of 31 for 277 yards and a touchdown and he rushed for 126 yards and three TDs on 24 carries. RB Ryan Wolpin scored two rushing touchdowns and he had a 60-yard touchdown catch. Santa Margarita (8-2), ranked No. 3 in the county, finished tied for second place with St. John Bosco of Bellflower. The Eagles beat St. John Bosco, so they will be the Trinity League's No. 2 representative.

The No. 3 Eagles racked up 499 yards of offense and made two key defensive stops in the second half en route to a 28-20 victory against St. John Bosco of Bellflower in a Trinity League showdown. The victory qualifies the Eagles for the playoffs. QB Johnny Stanton rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns to pace Santa Margarita's offense. The junior also passed for 153 yards. RB Ryan Wolpin, also a junior, added 142 yards rushing, including a 28-yard touchdown run with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter as the Eagles took a 28-20 lead.

Johnny Stanton is OC Register Football Athlete of the week
Stanton, a junior, completed 11 of 16 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 39-7 victory over rival Tesoro. Stanton had touchdown passes of 34 and 15 yards both in the first half.

2011 Eagle Football Ranked #10 in State
Santa Margarita has been ranked No. 10 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports in its preseason high school football rankings. Expectations are definitely on the rise for the Eagles in their second season under head coach Harry Welch, who has won CIF state football titles at two other schools. Last year’s team suffered close losses to both Mission Viejo and Servite and had four players earn All-State Underclass recognition. Offensive tackle Max Tuerk (6-6, 265) is one of the best in the nation while three Eagle sophomores were on the all-state sophomore team: tackle Riley Sorensen (6-5, 320), quarterback-defensive back Johnny Stanton (6-3, 210) and receiver River Cracraft (6-0, 180).

SMCHS win the Ayala Linemen Competition
The host Bulldogs were second with Eisenhower (Rialto) third. Nineteen teams competed in the contest that had a series of events. The team with the lowest score was victorious. Teams were awarded one point for first, two points for second, and so on, in events such as obstacle course, tire throw, NFL agility, bench press, weigh in, tire flip relay, wheelbarrow relay, high knee relay, 8-man 880 relay, kettle bell relay, truck push and five-man sled.
