Last Game Vs. Los ALamitos

On Homecoming Game night, as they took the field for the second half and trailing 14-0, Santa Margarita Catholic had a huge slope to maneuver to get back in the contest versus then No. 7 Los Alamitos. However, the Eagles came out energized and imposed their will on the Griffins. What transpired in the first five minutes of play was a complete shift of momentum as SMC scored three touchdowns to take a 21-14 advantage. In all, they would score on their first four offensive possessions and add a defensive score to stun the Griffins, 42-21 -- a homecoming to remember.

QB Jaxon Potter had his coming-out party, throwing four touchdown passes in that second stanza, two each to Niko Lopez and Jalen Jones. Both receivers made several spectacular catches on the night. Lopez has scored a touchdown in each of the Eagles’ first five games. The gritty play of the SMC offensive line rewarded Potter with sufficient time to find his open men. For Potter, it was a new career-high for touchdown passes in a single game.

The defense was led by Jacob Bower who intercepted all-everything quarterback Malachi Nelson twice and scooped up a fumble from his hands, as well, and returned it for a 27-yard touchdown. He also registered nine tackles (one for loss). Blake Wilson had an interception and Donovan Comestro contributed four pass defenses. This was, without a doubt, the biggest win for the program in some time. It was also the signature moment in new, young Head Coach Anthony Rouzier’s career. The Eagles have now won three-consecutive Homecoming Games and improved their all-time record to 20-10 (.667) with the victory.

In Brief: The Spring 2021 season saw JSerra Catholic field a squad that was an extremely young and mostly inexperienced group. The Lions now turn to longtime assistant Scott McKnight as the new Head Coach who is tasked with guiding the stable of young talent and rebuilding the foundation of a contender. McKnight has been an assistant coach for 10 seasons and has a tremendous reputation when it comes to special teams. McKnight has also coached at Tesoro (Los Flores) and Mater Dei (Santa Ana). The reins of the offense fall to sophomore quarterback Dylan Mills, who eventually took control of the starting job during his freshman season. Mills is said to have the ability to extend plays with his feet and throws a great deep ball. Perhaps the most talented player the Lions have is punter / kicker Chase Barry. One outlet has ranks the 6-5, 215-pound senior as the No. 5 punter in the nation for the class of 2022. He is categorized as a “big-time punting prospect.” Barry averages 45-plus yards per punt, with 4.5-plus (seconds) hang time. The reigning Trinity League “Punter of the Year” has offers from all three service academies: Army-West Point, Navy and Air Force. Despite facing some struggles, the new CIF-SS Playoff division system could give the Lions the opportunity to play in a lower division as an at-large team, primarily due to its strength of schedule in the mighty Trinity League. The Lions will start non-seniors at many key positions.

NEXT WEEK’S OPPONENT: Servite

SMCHS Season Game No. 7 / Trinity League Game No. 2
Game Day / Date: Thursday, October 7, 2021 @ Orange Coast College (Costa Mesa), 7:00 p.m.
School Location: Anaheim
Nickname: Friars
Head Coach: Troy Thomas: 2005-2012 & 2018 - Present: 96-36-0 (.727) - 12 Seasons
2021 Fall Record: 5-0

2021 Spring Season: 4-2 Overall | 3-2 Trinity League (3rd)
2019 Season: 7-4 Overall | 3-2 Trinity League (3rd) | 0-1 CIF-SS Division 1 Playoffs
All-Time Series: Servite leads 15-10-1
Last Game: Servite won 42-13 @ Santa Ana Bowl - Spring 2021 (SMC home)
Last SMCHS Win: 51-28 @ Cerritos College - 2017
Players to Watch:

  • Tetairoa McMillan | Senior | Wide Receiver
  • Josiah Laban | Senior | Offensive Guard
  • Noah Fifita | Senior | Quarterback
  • Mason Graham | Senior | Defensive Line / Offensive Line
  • Jacob Manu | Senior | Linebacker
  • Mike Hurst | Senior | Defensive Back
  • Houston Thomas | Senior | Running Back / Defensive Back
  • Keyan Burnett | Senior | Tight End
  • Emmett Mosley | Sophomore | Wide Receiver / Defensive Back
  • Vaka Hansen | Junior | Defensive Lineman

In Brief: The Noah Fifita to Tetairoa McMillan quarterback-receiver combination is nearly impossible to contain. Then you add tight end / receiver Keyan Burnett to the mix and you have a potent offensive squad. Unfortunately for Servite, Burnett missed both games against the “Big Two” in the spring due to injury, but is back and healthy. The defense with linebackers Jacob Manu and Aden Eckenwiler and defensive lineman Mason Graham is fast and always on the attack. Two-way performer Emmett Mosley has been described as the best sophomore in Orange County. If any team in Southern California can compete with Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, it’s this one. Although, the record shows that the Friars haven’t beaten either school since 2011. Servite will play both in back-to-back weeks on October 23 and 30 -- a true test. The Friars have plenty of other outstanding returnees, as well. In all, they have eight starters returning on defense. Barring injury, Servite might be just good enough to vault to the top this year.

HEAD COACH Anthony Rouzier

Anthony Rouzier begins his second season as the Head Varsity Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Prior to taking the reigns of the program in the spring of 2021, Rouzier coached at SMC for three seasons, first serving as the linebacker coach and then as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. The path to Head Coach started on August 27, 2020 when Rouzier was named on an interim basis. He replaced Tim Walsh after his resignation from the position to focus on a medical issue. On February 5, 2021, Rouzier was named fulltime Head Coach by school President Andy Sulick.

Rouzier played collegiately at the University of Connecticut in 2005. There he was the first true freshman walk-on to start in the Division-era of the school. He then transferred to the University of Massachusetts as a scholarship athlete and was a member of two Colonial Athletic Conference championships teams. In the classroom, Rouzier earned All-Academic All-Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.

After his collegiate playing days, in 2014, Rouzier coached at Amherst Regional High School (Massachusetts) where he started as the linebacker coach and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator mid-season. Rouzier then proceeded to coach the outside linebackers at Winston-Salem State University (North Carolina) in the spring of 2015. Shortly after that, he returned as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, the University of Massachusetts. There he worked with the defensive backs in 2015 and linebackers in 2016.

Rouzier then found his way to Europe to coach with the Hamburg Huskies of the German Football League. There, in 2017, he was the interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. For his success, Rouzier was promoted to and accepted the Head Coaching position. Rouzier was also the Defensive Coordinator for the Under-17 Hamburg State All-Star team and worked with a recruiting service that helped European prospects earn Division 1 college scholarships in the United States. One of the other German coaches was current SMC assistant coach Sean Embree. It was Embree who convinced Rouzier that coaching at SMC would be worth his while and he soon found his way to South Orange County.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rouzier married his wife Elwira, who he met in Germany in 2018. He holds Juris Doctor and Master’s of Business Administration degrees from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-creator of a children’s book and non-profit organization that promotes health and wellness.
