Orange Lutheran's turn

The Lancers beat No. 1 Santa Margarita in the weird Trinity.

BREA, CA., October 19, 2006 – Jim Kunau was asked to explain what he had just seen the past two weeks. "This," he said, "is a weird league."

Kunau, Orange Lutheran's football coach, watched his team lose to Servite last week in one Trinity League game. The next night, he watched Santa Margarita beat Mater Dei in another.

On Thursday night, Kunau saw Lutheran beat Santa Margarita, 49-39, in a Trinity League game at Brea Olinda High.

Santa Margarita, after its 17-7 victory over Mater Dei last week, had allowed only 54 points in six games, The Eagles were 6-0 and ranked No. 1 in Orange County going into Thursday's game.

Fifth-ranked Lutheran is 6-1 overall, and 1-1 in the Trinity League. Santa Margarita is now 6-1, 1-1. Servite will be 2-0 after the Friars' forfeit victory tonight against JSerra, and St. John Bosco of Bellflower takes a 6-0 overall record and 1-0 league record into its game tonight against Mater Dei (5-1, 0-1) at Santa Ana Stadium.

Lutheran's standout players had standout games Thursday night.

Senior quarterback Aaron Corp, who has committed to USC and had several Trojans coaches, including Pete Carroll, watching him from the Lutheran sideline, was 16 for 22, for 264 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 105 yards on 15 carries.

Junior tight end Blake Ayles, finally healthy after nursing a shoulder injury, had nine receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior running back Ricky Pemasa had seven carries - all in the second half - for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Senior defensive end Mike Reardon, another USC-committed Lancer, had three sacks.

However, a team that scores 39 points has some offensive stars, too.

Santa Margarita senior quarterback Erie Reisinger threw two touchdown passes. Eagles senior receiver Ryan Maxwell caught those two touchdown passes, and had a total of six catches for 92 yards. Senior running back Chris Spangenberg ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

Reardon said the Lancers had a focused and resolute practice this week, after last week's 28-21 overtime loss to Servite.

"We had to get it done,” he said. "We saw how Santa Margarita out-physicaled Mater Dei last week, and this week it was our turn to out-physical Santa Margarita."

Santa Margarita led twice. The Eagles had a 7-0 lead on an 11-yard touchdown run by Spangenberg in the first quarter. They had a 28-21 lead early in the third quarter when Erik Manarino scored on a 55-yard fumble return.

The Lancers tied it quickly in the third on a 13-yard touchdown run by Tyson Seneca, then took the lead for good, 35-28, on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Corp to Ayles.

Lutheran plays Mater Dei next Friday at Santa Ana Stadium. Santa Margarita picks up a forfeit victory against JSerra next week.
