2006 EAGLES

Edison - CIF Game Notes

This week marks the semi-finals of the 2006 CIF Pac 5 Division (Division I) Toyota CIF-SS Championship. The Eagles (10-2) will be playing host to the Huntington Beach Edison Chargers (10-2) as part of a double header at The Home Depot Center in Carson. Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm and will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Net.  A live audio feed will be available via www.eaglesfootball.com with Rob Buska calling the play-by-play and Former Eagle and All-Big 12 WR John Minardi providing color commentary. The Orange Lutheran - Long Beach Poly semi-final game will kickoff at 4:30 pm.

The Home Depot Center with a capacity of 27,000 is the second largest venue the Eagles have ever played in.  In 1999 the Eagles played the Mater Dei Monarchs before an estimated crowd of 17,000 at the 43,050 seat Angel Stadium.

The Eagles are in the CIF playoffs for the 17th time in their 18 varsity season and the 12th year in a row. Their all-time playoff record stands at 20-14.  The Eagles are in the CIF semifinals for the first time since 1998 and the 5th time in their 18 varsity seasons. They are 3-1 in their previous four trips to this round. They lost 13-7 to Lawrence Phillip's (Nebraska, St. Louis Rams) Baldwin Park team in 1990. They beat Tustin and Deshaun Foster (UCLA, Carolina Panthers) 31-0 in 1996, Newport Harbor 27-7 in 1997 and Irvine 17-0 in 1998.

Their 25-24 win over Mission Viejo was their closest playoff win ever. Their closest win previously was a seven-point 29-22 win over Colton in 1991. The 49 points scored in the 49-23 win over Lakewood was the most points they scored in a playoff game since defeating Tustin 55-42 in the 1997 CIF Division V Championship. The 26-point win was their largest margin of victory in the playoffs since a 41-point win (59-18) over Servite in the 1997 quarterfinals.

With the win over Mission Viejo the Eagles have won two straight playoff games for the first time since 1998. They are now 20-14 (.588) in playoff competition and 3-7 in the playoffs since entering the highest classification (Division I / Pac-5) in 1999.

Santa Margarita has been designated as the home team for this game and will wear blue jerseys.   The Eagles are 7-1 at home so far in 2006.  Their most wins as a home team in any given year is 8 in 1996. Their best home records were in the following seasons: 1997 (6-0), 1990 (8-1), 1996 (7-1) and 2006 (7-1).

Santa Margarita is 9-6 all-time as the home team in the playoffs and are 3-1 as the “home” team in playoff games away from Saddleback College. The Eagles have never played at The Home Depot Center.

The win over Mission Viejo was the Eagles first home playoff win since they beat Rialto 43-29 in 2001. This will be their first neutral site “home” game since being designated the host for the 1998 CIF Division VI Championship Game vs. Woodbridge.

The Eagles' 10-2 record marks the most wins they've had in a season since they finished 10-4 in 1998. It’s also their fifth 10+ win season.  They finished 12-1 in 1990, 13-1 in 1996, 14-0 in 1997 and 10-4 in 1998.

The Eagles' all-time win-loss mark now stands at 149-62-3 (.703) after 214 varsity games.

The Chargers are 10-2 and coming off a 28-21 win over Servite. They finished 2nd in the Sunset League and are led by Head Coach Dave White and his son, standout senior LB/WR Hunter White.

Prior to being named head coach, Jacot, 32, had spent the previous four years as an assistant at Santa Margarita including the last three as Defensive Coordinator and Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.  During his tenure as an assistant the Eagles have captured two Serra League Titles and developed a reputation for fielding active defensive units highlighted by stellar defensive line play.  In 2002, the Eagles set several individual and team defensive marks and posted two shutouts including a decisive 19-0 win over national power Mater Dei.  They also allowed seven points or less in five of their 11 games.

In announcing Coach Jacot’s appointment Athletic Director Richard Schaaf said, “Santa Margarita Catholic High School is fortunate to have several outstanding candidates, and the school feels that at this time Mike Jacot is the best man for the job.”  Said Jacot, “I’m honored to be selected as the new Head Football Coach of Santa Margarita Catholic High School.  This was a goal of mine and I am very pleased.  We have a great group of kids coming back and I look forward to facing the challenges of the Serra League and upholding the great winning tradition here.”

After graduating with an Associates of Arts Degree in 1996 he moved on to Oregon State where he lettered two years (1996 and 1997) before graduating in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Development and Family Science.  Mike and his wife Nicole have one child, Michael Jr. (4), and currently reside in Tustin.
