The Eagles are 8-1-2 as they enter Week 12 of their 13th varsity season. This marks the ninth time in that the Eagles have advanced to the quarterfinal round of CIF-SS Playoffs, but the first since 1998. Eagle teams have a 4-4 record in 2nd round play.

The Los Alamitos Griffins are 8-2-1 on the year with one loss being a 21-14 setback to the Eagles in Week 2. They finished tied for first in Sunset League play with a 4-0-1 record, and defeated St. Paul 28-7 last week.

This is the third meeting between Los Al and Santa Margarita, and the second this year at Veteran's Stadium. The series is tied 1-1, and complete recaps of prior Griffin-Eagle contests are included herein.

Santa Margarita is 3-1 in "rematch" games. They defeated Newport Harbor in the 1996 and 1997 playoffs, beat Irvine in the 1998 semi's, but lost to Woodbridge in the 1998 CIF title game.

Santa Margarita finished 2-0-1 in Serra League play and captured their fourth league title in six years and second in a row.

Their .748 winning percentage is the best in Orange County.

Head Coaches
Jim Hartigan, 41, is 116-38-3 (.748) in his 13th season as the Eagles' varsity Head Coach. Overall, Coach Hartigan has a 132-41-4 (.757) record in 15 seasons if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He has won four League Championships and two CIF Titles - all coming in the past six years. Jim was honored as the both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the Year. Coach Hartigan has directed his squads into the playoffs in 12 of their 13 seasons, including 2001, and has never posted a losing season. Jim has coached six High School All-Americans, 68 players who have gone on to the collegiate ranks and three who have played in the NFL. His 28-game winning streak from 1996-98 is the second best in Orange County history. The Griffins are led by 23rd year coach John Barnes who has a career mark of 203-62 (.766).
