1993 EAGLES

Special Teams Outlook

The Eagles Special Teams have always had a reputation of being well prepared and able to break a game wide open. This was exemplified in the Tustin game last season  when SM returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score, and on the ensuing kickoff recovered the onside kick. This year the Eagles return Honorable Mention All-League kicker Ryan Korinke. The junior kicker made 32 of 39 extra points and made 4 of 5 field goals. Korinke will also battle senior Derek Yankoff and senior Brian Griffin for the punting duties. The long snapping position is solid with returning starter Mike DeFries. The senior was perfect in 1992 on all of his snaps. Also competing for the spot is senior Frank Brenes, who was a backup and has shown excellent skills short snapping. Yankoff and sophomores Mike Whelan and Ryan Brooks will be some of the key return specialist on kickoffs, and Brad and Brian Finneran will possibly handle the punt returns with Griffin. Once again, the Eagles look to have a strong nucleus to keep the tradition of sound special team units a strong aspect of Eagle Football.
