Santa Margarita 8-0 after winning game called because of fog at halt
MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 26, 1990 – Santa Margarita improved to 8-0 with a 21-0 victory over Brawley on Friday night in a game that was called because of heavy fog with just over a minute to play in the first half.
After Santa Margarita scored on its first two possessions, a light fog began filtering into the stadium. Three plays later, the fog became too dense to see across the field.
Play continued, but after Santa Margarita quarterback Trevor Yankoff ran a draw-play keeper into the end zone with 1:02 left in the half, the officials met at midfield with coaches and administrators from both schools.
"The officials didn't want to go on." Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said, “and they made it very clear we get the victory. We're not going to reschedule.”
"It was too thick," Brawley coach Mike Swearingen said. “It's not going to get any better and I don’t want to get anyone hurt."
