Eagles 17 - Pasadena 7
Santa Margarita rolls to fifth straight, 17-7
MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 5, 1990 – Santa Margarita keeps moving up against a higher class of opponent each week and keeps winning. The Eagles used their most balanced offensive attack of the season and a tenacious defense to defeat Division II Pasadena, 17-7, Friday before an estimated crowd of 1,000 at Saddleback College.
Santa Margarita, playing a free-lance schedule this season, moved to 5-0 despite a rash of injuries that hampered the offense. The Eagles rallied behind quarterback Trevor Yankoff, who completed 13 of 17 passes for 145 yards and ran for a touchdown.
“When the ground game was slowed down by the fumbles, it was nice to see Trevor step up and throw the ball well,' Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said. "We're going to start unleashing the reins on him. I think you'll see us be a more balanced football team."
Santa Margarita's Josh Ireland did not start after an ankle problem kept him out of practice all week, but the junior tailback rushed for 111 yards in 28 carries.
Santa Margarita scored on the game's opening drive when Travis Lucero connected on a 42-yard field goal with 6:14 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles added a touchdown on their next possession with Yankoff scrambling 12 yards on a bootleg for a 10-0 lead at the 10:51 mark of the second quarter.
Santa Margarita lost three fumbles in the second quarter, its first ones of the season, but the Eagles defense held off Pasadena (2-3). Santa Margarita limited the Bulldogs to 226 yards total offense and eight first downs.
Pasadena closed to within 10-7 on a 3-yard run by Mario Gulley with 3:54 left in the third quarter.
Santa Margarita drove 51 yards in seven plays to score on its next possession. Ireland capped the drive on a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left.
