ANALYSIS
Santa Margarita has not had to play catch-up often, but the Eagles had to last week in their first-round victory over Claremont. They overcame a 14-7, third-quarter deficit. Travis Lucero kicked the game-winning field goal with 6:38 remaining. Bell Gardens finished third in the Whitmont League and was ranked 10th in the final CIF-SS Division IV poll. It has one of the section's top place-kickers, Eric Hurtarte, whose ninth field goal of the season provided the Lancers' points last week.
SHORT CUT
With his 1950 style flat-top haircut, Santa Margarita football coach Jim Hartigan looks like somebody who just stepped out of the first "Back to the Future" movie. "When I started coaching, I decided to go with a short haircut," he said. "I think it sets a standard. It shows the kids I'm not afraid to get my hair cut short, and we ask them to cut their hair short every year. I've stayed with it. I like it." Esperanza coach Gary Meek had his head shaved when his team won the Empire League title, part of a preseason deal he struck with players. If Santa Margarita wins the Division IV championship, will Hartigan agree to let his hair grow Milli Vanilli style? Just wondering.
