CAL-HI SPORTS
Nov. 27,
1998

Spencer McCroskey - RB/DB (Sr.)
The senior running back and defensive back did the job on both sides of the ball as Santa Margarita won over Tustin. On offense, McCroskey rushed for 131 yards on 12 carries and scored one touchdown. On defense he registered an amazing 21 tackles. He was named the team (internal award) Offensive and Defensive “Player of the Game.” His 131 yards rushing also put him over the 1,000-yard threshold for the season.

Sept. 7,
2012

Johnny Stanton - QB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - It was an interesting scene for the Eagles in their 55-0 win over Trabuco Hills two weeks ago as Stanton not only completed 17 of his 21 pass attempts for 325 yards and three scores but he rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns. The Nebraska commit played in front of a crowd full of Nebraska fans and media, who were in town for the Cornhuskers’ game the next day against UCLA.

Sept. 14,
2012

Ryan Wolpin - RB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - During the Eagles’ 72-0 win over Carson, Wolpin set the school record for rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in a game, according to team SID Adrian Peters. Wolpin carried the ball 16 times for 173 yards and six scores.

Nov. 9,
2012

Ryan Wolpin - RB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - In the week’s top game for matching state-ranked teams, Wolpin’s rushing was the key for the No. 12 Eagles in their 38-13 win over No. 23 El Toro in the Southern Section Playoffs. Wolpin racked up 218 yards and two scores on 26 carries and hopes for similar success in this week’s showdown with St. Bonaventure.

Sept. 6,
2013

Kyle Sweet - WR (Jr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Sweet set three school receiving records in a controversial 34-31 double overtime loss to national power Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. The junior hauled in a touchdown reception from quarterback K.J. Costello for 95 yards and caught a total of 13 passes for 294 yards. The yardage total earned Sweet a place in the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book, but it can’t change a blown call by a referee. A 24-yard pass to Grant Clancy in overtime was ruled an incomplete pass by referee Bob Yoakum after another official signaled it a touchdown. It was ruled incomplete, although video showed it should have been ruled a touchdown. Yoakum sent an apologetic email to coach Harry Welch that the veteran coach applauded. Costello, a sophomore, finished with 443 yards passing.

Aug. 29,
2014

Rick Wade - DE (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - A defensive end committed to UCLA, Wade had 13 tackles and two sacks in Santa Margarita’s 26-21 win over Bishop Amat.

Sept. 5,
2014
K.J. Costello - QB (Jr.)
Southern California ”Offensive Player of the Week” - The well-built 6-4, 205-pounder has had an amazing start to the season and has set records in both games for the Eagles, which helped them become our highest ranked newcomer this week into our state rankings at No. 20 overall. During their 56-27 win against Santiago (Corona), Costello passed for 408 yards and four touchdowns. That helped Santa Margarita set a school record for yards in a game with 618, according to school SID Adrian Peters. Already this season, Costello also has set the school record for completions in a game with 27 the week before in Santa Margarita’s season opener. Costello happens to be one of the nation’s top junior quarterbacks.
Sept. 12,
2014

Kyle Sweet - WR (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Sweet now owns Santa Margarita records for most catches and most yards in a game. He broke the record for receptions with 15 and had 201 yards and one touchdown in the 21-10 win over Dorsey (Los Angeles). Sweet had 294 yards in one game last year against Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas.

Sept. 19,
2014

Kyle Sweet - WR (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - With the Eagles down early and big, he still stayed focused during a 41-10 loss to nationally ranked Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. On the night, Sweet caught 10 passes for 199 yards.

Oct. 17,
2014

K.J. Costello - QB (Jr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Breaking his own school record for passes completed in a game and also earning a spot in our Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book, Costello completed 34 of his 47 pass attempts for 495 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for two scores as the Eagles came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Orange Lutheran 42-41. Costello already has been ranked as one of the top quarterbacks among the Class of 2016 in the nation.

Kyle Sweet - WR (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - While K.J. Costello was setting all sorts of records throwing the football, it was this senior wideout Kyle Sweet that matched his own school record for receptions in a game with 15 for 235 yards and two touchdowns during the Eagles’ 42-41 win over Orange Lutheran.

Oct. 24,
2014

Grady Higgins - LB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - OCVarsity’s “Defensive Player of the Week” had 12 tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble during the Eagles’ 22-17 win over Servite.

Sept. 4,
2015

K.J. Costello - QB (Sr.)
Dylan Crawford - WR (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Costello to Crawford is a connection that fans should get used to hearing and seeing when following the Eagles this season. While Costello passed for 432 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-14 victory versus Santiago (Corona), Crawford was on the receiving end of six passes that gained 176 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Aug. 26,
2016

Malone Mataele - KR / DB (Jr.)
Southern California “Players of the Week” - Despite it coming in a losing effort by his team, Mataele’s performance was not a losing effort during Santa Margarita’s 48-21 loss to state No. 5 Mission Viejo. In fact, scoring two of the Eagles’ three touchdowns on the night while playing special teams against such a great foe is deserving of applause. Mataele scored those two touchdowns on kickoff returns, bringing one back 97 yards and another 94 yards. On defense, the junior two-way player also finished with eight total tackles and a pass deflection.

Sept. 2,
2016

Grant Calcaterra - WR (Sr.)
Richard Wagner - QB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - In the Eagles’ 37-7 win over Loyola, they bounced back from a loss to Mission Viejo thanks to huge totals from their WR-QB combo. Calcaterra, recruited as a tight end and committed to Oklahoma, tied a school record with three touchdown catches but even more impressively had 14 receptions for 292 yards. Wagner was reported a 11-for-11 at halftime with more than 200 yards. He threw some incompletions in the second half, but still ended 22-of-30 for 397 yards and three touchdowns.

Sept. 9,
2016

Trey Green - RB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Seeing all sorts of “green: in front of him when handed the football during a 48-35 win over Bishop Alemany, Green rushed for 240 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

Nov. 4,
2016

Chad Magyar - RB (Jr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - Before the final game of the regular season, this junior’s season-high was 147 yards rushing in a game. In this contest, he easily surpassed that during a 49-24 win over Servite as he rushed for 264 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

Sept. 7,
2017
Dylan Brady - K (Sr.)
Southern California ”Special Teams Player of the Week” - Brady did it all in the kicking department as he accounted for 13 points in a romp over Bishop Alemany. He was 2-of-3 on field goal attempts, 7-of-8 on PAT conversions and 11-of-11 on kickoff touchbacks. Brady was successful on field goals from 47 and 55 yards. The 55 yard field goal was an all-time school record and the only one ever successful from 50-plus yards.
Sept. 21,
2021
Jake Bower - LB (Jr.)
Southern California “Defensive Players of the Week” - Southeastern Orange County is where we find our Southern California Defensive Player of the Week and my gosh what a doozy we found in Bower. Facing a previous state No. 7 Los Alamitos and its 5-star quarterback Malachi Nelson, the offense produced the points but Bower was part of the defense that powered the Eagles to a 42-21 homecoming win to remember. Bower, a 6-foot, 184-pound linebacker, was all over Nelson and intercepted the all-everything quarterback twice. He also scooped up a Nelson fumble, as well, and returned it for a 27-yard touchdown. In addition, Bower hit the shower with a registered nine tackles (one for loss). With the victory, Santa Margarita improved to 4-1 with a lone loss to state No. 6 Norco and it allowed the Eagles to jump 10 spots to No. 12 in the most recent state rankings.
October 6,
2021
Hero Kanu - DL (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - One of the most coveted recruits from Southern California, Hero enjoyed the most dominating game of his prep career in the 38-13 win at JSerra Catholic. With his mother in attendance, just arrived from Germany and watching her son play in person for the first time, the senior defensive tackle had a career-high 2 1/2 sacks, two tackles (both for loss), a blocked PAT and two quarterback hurries. His statistics this season are not as elevated as many expected. This is due the double-teaming and other schemes implemented by coaches to try and avoid his impact. JSerra had no answer as he was camped in their backfield all night. After the win over JSerra Catholic on October 1, Kanu announced that his college list has been whittled down to five schools: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Georgia and LSU.
August 31,
2022
Jacob Bower - LB (Sr.)
State Stat Stars of the Week - For the second-consecutive week, the senior LB had a huge impact game for the SMC defense as the team started the season with a 2-0 record. He has registered 16 tackles in each contest. This includes three for loss in Friday’s big win over No. 37 Norco, 36-14. Bower’s mark is fifth in the state after two games. This is nothing new, as Bower was a cog in last season’s defense — All-Trinity League Second-Team, third on the team with 58 total tackles and tied for second-most interceptions in the Trinity League during the regular season. He now has 1 1/2 sacks, two quarterback hurries, one pass defended and a fumble recovery in 2022. Bower is a star rugby player as well and holds a 4.1 grade point average.
October 11,
2022
Jaxon Potter - QB (Sr.)
Offensive Player of the Week -

Last week, in a 29-28 victory over JSerra of San Juan Capistrano that boosted Santa Margarita Catholic four spots to No. 14 in the most recent state rankings, and dropped JSerra to No. 17, Potter passed for 412 yards and two TDs, with 319 yards coming in the first half. Even so, the teams were knotted at 21-21 after two quarters. The host Eagles fell behind 28-21 after three quarters but Potter pulled a rabbit out of his helmet when after Taurian Nash scored on a 1-yard plunge head coach Anthony Rouzier decided to gamble and go for a deuce. Unlike the Las Vegas Raiders who failed at their attempt to win with a 2-point conversion, Potter and the Eagles succeeded when the 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior signal-caller dropped back to pass and threw a strike to Kyle Brody to close out the scoring. The final tally came with around nine minutes remaining and from there the Santa Margarita Catholic defense sealed the deal. For Potter, he got the 412 yards on 37 of 45 attempts. Not only did the 37 completions break his school record of 34 completions set last season, he now gets his name in the Cal-Hi Sports Online Record Book a second time on the Most Completions (Game) list to go with last season’s performance. So far this season Potter has passed for 1,762 yards and 18 TDs with only one interception, and those are top 20 reported marks in the CIF Southern Section. We’re sure Jaxon would not only like to give a shout out to the defense for its fourth quarter efforts, but also to his favorite target Emmett Mosley. The junior wide receiver had 14 catches for 152 yards and one touchdown, and while neither of those marks makes the record rook, the 14 receptions ties for second best in school history.

September 5,
2023
Trent Mosley - WR/DB (Soph.)
Multi-Purpose/Special Teams Player of the Week - Several players came up big in the Eagles’ 34-14 win over No. 20 ranked Liberty, but it’s Mosley, who is one of the top sophomore recruits in the state, that takes home the honors. As a wide receiver, the 5-foot-10, 160-pounder pulled in nine catches for 187 yards and two TDs, including an 82-yard romp to the house. The Santa Margarita offense got the most out of Mosley as well after he took three snaps from the wildcat formation and scored twice, including a 38-yard TD run. So far this season Mosley, who already has offers from Arizona, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas A&M, UNLV, USC and Washington, has 20 pass receptions for 323 yards and the two TDs, plus he has 85 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Mosley also gets some time on defense and has three tackles this season, including one in the Liberty win.
