The Eagles (5-4) gave up 4 first half turnovers to the Friars ending the first half down 27 points. QB KJ Costello was 21/43 for 285 yards with 2 Touchdowns and 2 Interceptions. WR Noah Rasheed caught 7 passes for 127 yards and 1 TD. WR Grant Calcatarra caught 6 passes for 105 yards and 1 TD.
Eagles 14 - Lancers 28
The Eagles (5-3) lost a tough game to the Orange Lutheran Lancers. QB KJ Costello was 21/30 for 202 yards. WR Grant Calcaterra caught 9 passes for 136 yards and 1 TD.
Eagles 28 - J Serra 21
The Eagles (5-2) beat the Lions 28-21 in an away game at Saddleback JC. QB Richard Wagner was 12/21 for 181 yards and 3 Touchdowns passing to lead the Eagles past the Lions. Wagner also had 7 rushes for 53 yards. WR Grant Calcaterra caught 2 passes for 117 yards and 2 TDs. The defense stepped up to stop the Lions behind the strong play of DE Alec Stewart who led the team with 13 tackles and 3 TFL.
Eagles 14 - St. John Bosco 62
Santa Margarita (4-2) led 14-7 after the first quarter, but St. John Bosco, scored 55 consecutive points for the win. QB KJ Costello was 15 of 23 for 184 yards and 2 TDs. WR Dylan Crawford caught 8 passes for 118 yards and 1 TD. WR Noah Rasheed caught 6 passes for 43 yards and a TD. LB Matthew Mark led the defense with 14 tackles. LB Austin Barrette added 11 tackles, 1 TFL and 1 Sack. K Sam Loy broke his school record with a booming 75 yard punt.
Eagles 56 - Martin Luther King 7
Quarterback KJ Costello was 14 of 19 for 179 yards with 2 throwing TDs and 1 rushing TD. WR Dylan Crawford caught 8 passes for 106 yards. WR Grant Calcaterra caught 5 passes for 68 yards and 2 TDs. RB Trey Green ran for 69 yards and 2 TDs. K Sam Loy kicked field goals of 25 and 23 yards. LB Tanner Matthews added another TD on a interception in the 2nd quarter.
Eagles 14 - Westlake 21
The Eagles (3-1) fall to the Westlake Warriors 14 - 21 in an away game at Westlake. QB KJ Costello was 20 of 39 for 253 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT. WR Dylan Crawford caught 7 passes for 97 yards. WR Grant Calcaterra added 7 catches for 76 yards. RB Trey Green ran for 50 yards on 12 Carries. LB Tanner Mathews led the defense with 11 tackles and 1 sack. LB Matt Mark also contributed 11 tackles.
Eagles 33 - Dorsey 13
The Eagles (3-0) beat the Dorsey Dons 33-13 in a game at Trabuco Hills HS. Quarterback KJ Costello was 6 of 16 for 125 yards and 1 TD. KJ also scored with a 23 yard touchdown run. RB Trey Green had 20 rushes for 136 and 3 Touchdowns. On the defense LB Matthew Mark led the defense with 8 tackles. DB Darian Fernandez contributed 5 tackles and 1 interception. LB Tanner Matthews added 4 tackles and 1 interception. K Sam Loy kicked a school record long 69 yard punt.
Eagles 59 - Corona Santiago 14
KJ Costello again led the passing attack with 28 completions on 35 attempts (78.3%) and 5 touchdown passes. Dylan Crawford electrified the crowd with an 80 yard touchdown reception and finished the evening with 5 receptions for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. Calcaterra added 5 receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown as the Eagle passing attack racked up 444 yards. Trey Green led the rushing attack again with 73 yards on 6 carries (12.17 average) while scoring twice on the run and once on a 20 yard screen pass. Chad Magyar added 46 yards on 7 carries and 1 td. Defensively, the Eagles were led by defensive tackle, Alec Stewart, who harassed the Sharks' attack throughout the evening while recording 2 sacks, 5 lead tackles, and 3 unassisted tackles. Matt Mark, Tanner Matthews, and Austin Barrett led the line backing corps while Brennan Gibbons (6 tackles, 2 assists) and Noah Canty (1 tackle, 3 assists, 1 pass broken up) led the secondary as the Eagles shut out the Sharks in second half action. Sam Loy reached the end zone on all of his kickoffs while also tying an SM school record for the number of extra points in a contest (8).
Eagles 40 - Cathedral Catholic 14
The Eagles opened the season with a 40-14 win against the Cathedral Catholic HS Dons in the "Brothers in Arms" game in San Diego on Friday night. . KJ Costello threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 38 yards on six carries, and scored on a 1-yard QB sneak. RB Trey Green ran for 114 yards on 16 carries and 1 TD. KJ Costello places 3rd at the 2015 Elite 11 Competition
The event was held in Beaverton, Oregon and was broadcasted on ESPNU and continues to be the premier summer destination for the nations top 300 football players. Santa Margarita sends their second QB in 3 years (Johnny Stanton - 2012) to the Elite 11 Competition in Beaverton, Oregon. Along with his play on the field, KJ Costello competed in multiple camps to earn a spot to compete with the top QBs in the entire country. After several days of evaluations, KJ finished the competition as the 3rd best QB in the Elite 11 Challenge. With his senior year still ahead of him, KJ's main focus now is to get his team motivated and come together for one more run at a state title.
Another invite from the SM Football Team was 2016 WR Dylan Crawford. Dylan finished 5th in the rankings for best athlete in the competition. Testing included, 40 yard dash, shuttle run, medicine ball toss, etc. Dylan is the first skill player in the schools history to be invited to "The Opening" which is an extension of the Elite 11. At the end of the week, the country's best QBs are paired with skill players to compete in 7 on 7. Dylan and his team made it to the Semi-Finals.
