Cherry Creek 35 - Eagles 10
Eagle Football Comes up Short in Colorado
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO., September 6, 2019 – The Santa Margarita football team traveled to Colorado last week where they matched up with Colorado’s top ranked team in Cherry Creek, and would ultimately drop their second game of the season, 35-10. The Eagles (1-2) stumbled out of the gates, giving up 28 first half points before finding their footing in the second half for the second week in a row. Last week, the Eagle defense was able to shutout the Diablos in the second half, while this past week they held the Bruins to only seven second half points. A lot of positive’s can be found in this travel loss, as the Eagles were able to find more offensive firepower this week. With the injury to quarterback Colt Fulton, the Eagles inserted senior wide receiver Josh Contreras into the quarterback position where he did more than hold his own. Contreras would connect on 21/37 passes for 220 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Having a career night was sophomore receiver Ian Grogan, who hauled in five catches for 113 yards with a long of 64. In his first game of the season, baseball standout Connor Bane proved to be an additional weapon for the Eagles, catching five passes for 44 yards. The lone touchdown for the Eagles was in the reliable hands of Tyler Wetmore, who had six catches for 28 yards. On the ground, Nick Barcelos looked like Nick Barcelos again, carrying the ball 15 times for 102 hard-earned yards and keeping the defense honest to the run game.
Defensively, the leading tackler for the Eagles was junior linebacker Anthony Comestro with nine total tackles, followed by Greg Doyle (8), Derek Wilkins (7), while Drew Sulick and Shane Cova has six a piece. The Eagles secondary continues to give offenses issues, as senior Mark Ard added his second interception in just three games, while Mitch Messier added an interception of his own.
