2018 SEASON RECAP & HIGHLIGHTS
- The 2018 season represented the proud 30th overall season that Santa Margarita Catholic High School fielded a football team in the fall.
- The Eagles won their season-opening game against Downey (@ Trabuco Hills High School), 59-21. This represented the second-straight win over Downey in the opener.
- The team boasted two games in which they gained 500 yards-or-more of total offense. This was achieved versus Mayfair (Lakewood) with 513 and the epic shootout with Orem (Utah), 504. Orem was one of the top-ranked schools in the state of Utah.
- In the past three seasons, 2016-18, a span of 33 games, the potent Eagles offense bettered the 500-plus yard total offense threshold nine times -- twice achieving 600-plus and once 700-plus yards. That is more than twenty-five percent of the games played. In addition, Santa Margarita just missed the magical threshold in a couple of other games as they gained 498 yards against Downey and 488 yards versus JSerra Catholic.
- The Eagles scored 46 points-or-more in three of first five games played -- all non-league. This included two games in which Santa Margarita broke the 50 point threshold, in wins over Downey (59-21) and Mayfair (Lakewood), 54-7. This was the second-consecutive season they Eagles broke the 50 mark in a win over Downey and the 49 point barrier versus Mayfair.
- Overall, Santa Margarita scored 291 points, an average just a shade below 30.0 per-game (29.1).
- The Eagles accumulated 4,001 yards in total offense (passing = 2,293 & rushing = 1,708). That is an average of 400.1 per-game.
- Several individual student-athletes were among the Orange County leaders at their position. In addition, some new marks were achieved in the school record book.
- The team has enjoyed back-to-back-to-back 2,000-yard-plus passers.
- The past three quarterbacks have finished in the top ten for passing yards in a single season in school history.
- SMCHS hired Brent Vieselmeyer as the sixth Varsity Head Football Coach in its history on February 19 (see Biography below).
- Ranked No. 18 in calpreps.com Preseason Poll for Southern Section - Divisions 1/2. Ranked No. 45 overall in California. Ranked No. 27 by MaxPreps.com for Southern Section and No. 18 for Divisions 1/2.
- Santa Margarita holds a 21-8-1 all-time record in season-opening games -- a .717 winning percentage.
SANTA MARGARITA CONSECUTIVE-GAME SCORING STREAK
- Current: 164-consecutive games.
- The last time the Eagles were shutout was in September, 2004 at Orange Lutheran, 19-0.
- The Eagles have only been shutout four times in their existence -- one time each in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
HEAD COACH BRENT VIESELMEYER
Brent Vieselmeyer enters his first season as the Head Varsity Football Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Coach Vieselmeyer was hired and introduced at a ceremonial announcement on February 19 by school President Andy Sulick. He comes to the Eagles, most recently, from Kansas University where he held the position of Offensive Analyst.
Prior to coaching last season with the Jayhawks, Vieselmeyer was with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League for three seasons. He joined the Raider franchise in 2015 after spending 15 years coaching at the collegiate and high school levels. While at Oakland, Vieselmeyer held positions as Assistant Linebackers Coach and Safeties Coach.
Vieselmeyer spent two seasons as Co-Defensive Coordinator at Houston Baptist University from 2013-14. Prior to joining the Huskies, he served as head coach at highly-respected Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, beginning in March 2007, where he launched the football program.
At Valor Christian, he compiled a stellar 55-11 record (.833), leading the Eagles to four-straight state championships in 2009 (3A), 2010 (4A), 2011 (4A) and 2012 (5A). Vieselmeyer boasted a perfect 16-0 record in the postseason at Valor Christian. He was named the Denver Post “Colorado Coach of the Year” in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and was All Sport Jefferson County “Coach of the Year” in 2010.
Vieselmeyer began his coaching career at Orange (California) Lutheran High School, where he spent eight years as defensive coordinator. He led the Lancers to the 2006 Division II California state title. They also won the 2004 CIF-Southern Section Championship and were finalists in 2000, 2001 and 2003. During his career, Vieselmeyer has seen 31 of his student-athletes earn college football scholarships.
A native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Vieselmeyer played linebacker at the University of Redlands (California) and Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in education from Concordia in 1999, and a Master of Arts in educational administration from the University of Phoenix in 2005.
Coach Vieselmeyer and his wife Marnie have two daughters, Payton and Quinn.

- Named by Orange County Register as a “Hot 150” player for 2019 -- No. 44
- Has received one Division I scholarship offer thus far -- Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, Florida). Head Coach is Lane Kiffin.
- Ranked No. 6 “Quarterback to Watch” in Orange County by Dave Albano of the Orange County Register.
- Attended the fourth-annual QB Collective Camp in the summer.
- Transfer from Centennial High School of Corona where he played as a sophomore on the varsity team in 2018. Played freshman season in 2017 at Alta High School in Sandy, Utah.
- In limited action last season for the Huskies, was 3-of-6 passing (50.0%) for 61 yards. Also rushed for 17 yards and one touchdown.

Coach Rich Lunsford begins his third season as Head Coach of Redlands East Valley (REV). Over the two previous seasons, Lunsford has led the Wildcats to an impressive 9-3-0 record in the competitive Citrus Belt League (13-9-0 overall). REV has qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Playoffs both of those seasons.

Head Coach: Chad Johnson -- 2nd Season (10-2-0, .833)
Chad Johnson took the reins of the Diablos in 2018, replacing an all-time County coaching legend in Bob Johnson (no relation). He now begins his second campaign at the helm. Prior to Mission Viejo, Johnson was the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, where he spent eight highly-successful seasons with the Braves. Johnson holds a Bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University where he was an Honorable Mention All-American kicker. Overall, this is Coach Johnson’s 18th year coaching football at the varsity level. Prior to Bosco, he spent nine years at Trabuco Hills High School.
