Thompson in 1999: the two-time Eagle captain rushed for 403 yards and eight touchdowns, caught 11 passes for 143 yards, returned nine punts for an 11.1 average, and averaged 24.9 yards per kickoff return including an 88-yard TD return vs. St. John Bosco. On defense, Thompson registered 64 tackles and two fumble recoveries including one he returned 23 yards for a TD vs. Bishop Amat. Tyler was selected Player of the Game seven times and was selected to the Serra League First Team. His efforts also earned him ream MVP honors. Thompson picked up 12 tackles and recovered a fumble at A.B. Miller in Week 11. His 12 tackles were the second most in his career behind the 14 he picked up at Tustin in the 1998 quarterfinals. Tyler picked up five tackles against Servite in Week 10 after getting seven tackles the week before vs. Mater Dei. Tyler tied a school record for touchdowns in a game as he ran for three (49, 54 and one yard) and returned a kickoff 88 yards for another vs. St. John Bosco. In that game, Thompson rushed for a career-high 130 yards on only 10 carries and also added nine tackles. The 49 and 54-yard touchdown runs were the longest of his career. He also added a one-yarder. Tyler caught a career-high five passes for 45 yards, scored on a 13-yard run vs. Alemany. Tyler returned a fumble 23-yards for a TD and added four tackles vs. Bishop Amat to be named Defensive Player of the Game. Tyler also added two receptions in that game for a career-high 56 yards. Tyler rushed for two touchdowns and picked up five tackles at Rancho Bernardo. Tyler rushed four times for 52 yards including a 41-yard scamper, scored a touchdown and added six tackles vs. San Clemente. The Captain picked up eight tackles at Carlsbad after rushing for a team high 85 yards (one touchdown) and blocking a PAT and returning a punt 17 yards against Lincoln in Week 1. Thompson in 1998: had an outstanding sophomore season, starting in all 14 games and earning all-league honors from both the coaches and the Daily Pilot. Tyler rushed for 362 yards and four touchdowns and collected 64 total tackles. Tyler collected a career-high 14 tackles at Tustin. In Week 11 at Aliso Niguel, Thompson rushed four times for 55 yards including a 27-yard touchdown run. Tyler registered six tackles and a forced fumble vs. Woodbridge in Week 10 to earn Defensive Player of the Game honors. Thompson displayed his speed at Newport Harbor as he raced 38 yards on an option play for his third touchdown of the season. He also added four tackles. Thompson had his best offensive showing of his sophomore year at El Toro as he rushed for 80 yards on 10 carries including 24- and 25-yard runs. He also added a 23-yard kickoff return. The first-year starter collected six tackles and rushed twice for 20 yards against Rancho Bernardo. Tyler collected four tackles and rushed twice for 31 yards including a 24-yard touchdown run at San Clemente. Tyler played a key role in the Dana Hills game as his first career reception (20 yards) set up the game clinching touchdown. He also collected two tackles including one for a loss. Thompson demonstrated his versatility as he returned a kickoff 29 yards, scored his first career touchdown on a 17-yard run and added seven tackles vs. Carlsbad after collecting ten tackles and rushing three times for 14 yards vs. Dominguez. Tyler led the team in average per carry (7.4) and scored on runs of 38, 27, 24 and 17 yards. Thompson finished third on the team with 362 yards rushing, and 7th with 64 tackles. Prior to the start of the season he was listed as one of the top sophomores in Orange County according to Gridiron Magazine. Thompson in 1997: Tyler rushed for 1,501 yards and 26 touchdowns for the freshman team, and rushed once for two yards vs. El Toro in Week 10. Thompson dressed for five varsity games. He helped anchor the Eagles' CIF winning 4 x 400-relay team in the spring of 1998, and was awarded the "Future Pride of the Eagles" for recognition as the most promising new varsity track member. Misc: In 36 varsity games since 1997, Thompson has been named a Player of the Game 18 times. He will also become the first Eagle to receive four Varsity Letters. Tyler has scored touchdowns four ways: rushing (23), receiving (4), kickoff return (1) and fumble recovery (2). Tyler is the only player to have 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in the same game. He holds the school record for longest rushing touchdown, most fumble return touchdowns in a career with two, most consecutive 200-yard games and most carries in a game. Thompson is listed as one of West's Ones to Watch. He is rated as the No. 5 running back and No. 15 linebacker in Orange County by Gridiron magazine. Tyler has a 3.5 GPA and has been on the honor roll every semester during high school. Thompson ran a 4.07 pro-agility time at the Nike USC Combine in May and has improved his 40-yard time to 4.50 in the 2000 off season. Tyler is a member of every meaningful Eagle speed and power club including the Strength, Iron, Power, Speed, 500, 800, 900 and 1,000 Pound Clubs. Tyler can bench press 315 and squat 425. He anchored the Eagles' 4 x 100 relay team in the spring of 2000 which posted a time of 42.99. Tyler is 3rd on the Eagles' all-time rushing list with 2,032 yards on 316 carries. His 23 rushing TDs are also 4th best. Thompson is 3rd in career all-puropse yards (3,506), 5th in fumble recoveries (4), 5th in career scoring with 180 points, 9th in total offense (2,032), 10th in tackles (169), 11th in receiving yardage (499) and 16th in receptions with 24.
