#22 Matt Vogel
#22 Senior Matt Vogel has picked up where he left off in 1999 and is enjoying a fine all-around season in 2000. The two-time All-Serra League First Teamer picked up 11 tackles at Servite in Week 10 to give him a team-high 77 on the season. He also made a diving effort to tip away a key third down pass. Matt recorded five tackles including ½ sacks vs. Mater Dei to spearhead an outstanding defensive effort. During the game Matt also became the most prolific punter in school history. Matt collected a team-high seven tackles vs. St. John Bosco after picking up six tackles in limited action against Alemany in Week 7. Vogel had a good game at Bishop Amat collecting five tackles, ½ sacks, forcing a fumble, catching two passes, rushing once for three yards and pooching a punt inside the Bishop Amat 10. The senior standout registered a team-high nine tackles, recovered a fumble and rushed once for six yards at Norco in Week 4. It was his 8th game in 16 career starts with at least nine tackles. Matt enjoyed a great game against Lakewood as he recorded an interception (the second of his career), six tackles, two receptions for 14 yards and punted for a 39.5 average. Matt also had a good game vs. Los Alamitos recording 13 tackles and tying his career-long with a 47-yard punt. Vogel also enjoyed a fine all-around game at Ayala in Week 1. The senior led the team with 10 tackles, caught an eight-yard pass, and punted for a 35-yard average. 1999: Matt emerged in 1999 as one of the surprises of the Eagles' defensive unit. Vogel earned First Team All-Serra League honors at LB as he collected 96 total tackles, a team-high three sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and an interception in his first year as a starter. Matt registered 10 tackles and forced a fumble at A.B. Miller in Week 11 to earn Defensive Player of the game honors. At Mater Dei, Matt recorded seven tackles, recovered a fumble and picked off his first pass to earn Player of the Game honors. He also set a team record for punting and yards punting with 10 for 309 yards. Matt recorded a season-high 12 tackles vs. San Clemente in Week 4 and has solid games vs. Bishop Amat (10 tackles, Player of the Game), Alemany (nine tackles, 1.5 sacks), Carlsbad (six tackles, Player of the Game) and Lincoln (nine tackles, 0.5 sacks). Matt's efforts earned him the team's Rookie of the Year award. Misc: Vogel has recorded 175 career tackles - good for 10th best on the all-time Eagle list. Matt has run a 4.58 40 and posted a 4.32 pro agility time. Vogel can bench 300, clean 235 and squat 390. He is a member of the Strength, Power, Iron, Speed, 500, and 800 Lb Clubs.
