St. John Bosco - Game Notes

This is the fourth meeting between the St. John Bosco Braves and the Santa Margarita Eagles and the second in Serra League play. Last year, Tyler Thompson rushed for 130 yards and tied a school record with four touchdowns as the Eagles rolled to an important 35-17 win at St. John Bosco. The Eagles also won 35-32 in 1993, and 42-6 in 1992.

The Braves were off to a 3-0 start before losses to Los Alamitos, Paramount, Loyola and St. Paul over the past four weeks. Last year they finished 3-7 and tied for 2nd in Serra League play at 1-2.

Santa Margarita is 20-4 vs. teams from Los Angeles County. They have won eight out of their past nine against LA County teams including a 31-10 win over Mission Hills Alemany last week.

The Eagles have done well over the years against Division I teams posting an 20-10 (.667) all-time record including a 3-1 mark against Del Rey League teams and a 6-3 all-time record against Serra League rivals going back to 1991.

The Eagles' .743 winning percentage is the best in Orange County.

The Eagles are ranked 8th in Division I and have been ranked in the Division I Top 10 for 15 of the past 18 polls. They are ranked 10th in Orange County, and have been in the OC Top 10 for 56 of the past 64 polls.

Head Coaches
Eagle Head Coach Jim Hartigan is 105-36-1 (.743) in his 12th season as varsity Head Coach. Overall Coach Hartigan has a 121-39-2 (.753) if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He was honored as the both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the Year. Coach Hartigan has directed his squads into the playoffs in ten of their 11 seasons and has never posted a losing season. Jim has coached in three CIF Championship Games, winning two, and several exciting games including two recognized as State Games of the Week during the 1998 season, a National Game of the Year (the 1997 CIF Championship Game) and the 1997 Orange County All-Star Game. The Braves are led by third-year coach Kiki Mendoza who is 10-17 (.370) overall.
