Norco - Game Notes
This is the Eagles' 139th varsity game and 68th road game. They have posted a record of 102-35-1 (.743) as they enter Week 4 of their 12th varsity season. Santa Margarita's all-time road record is 46-21 (.687).
The Eagles' .743 winning percentage is the best in Orange County.
This is the first game between Santa Margarita and the Norco Cougars and their second against an Inland Empire team this year. In Week 1 the Eagles defeated Chino Hills Ayala 22-17. Santa Margarita's all-time record against teams from the Inland Empire is 9-1.
Norco is a Division V school competing in the Mountain View League. They finished the 1999 season 9-3 after winning the Division V title in 1998. From 1992 to 1998 they appeared in seven straight CIF semi-final games.
The Cougars are 2-1, but unranked in the Division V Poll. The Eagles are ranked 7th in the Division I poll and have been ranked in the Division I Top 10 for 11 of the past 14 polls, and in the Orange County Top 10 for 53 of the past 60 polls.
Week 4 has been kind to the Eagles over the years. They have posted a 9-2 record, their second best week.
Head Coaches
Eagle Head Coach Jim Hartigan is 102-35-1 (.743) in his
12th season as varsity Head Coach. Overall Coach Hartigan
has a 118-38-2 (.757) if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower
level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before
the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He was honored as the
both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach
of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the
National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the
Year. Coach Hartigan has directed his squads into the playoffs
in ten of their 11 seasons and has never posted a losing
season. Jim has coached in three CIF Championship Games,
winning two, and several exciting games including two recognized
as State Games of the Week during the 1998 season, a National
Game of the Year (the 1997 CIF Championship Game) and the
1997 Orange County All-Star Game. The Cougars are led by
31st-year coach Gary Campbell who has 10 league titles,
three CIF titles and over 200 wins to his credit.
