Los Alamitos - Game Notes

This is the Eagles' 137th varsity games and 70th home game. They have posted a record of 101-34-1 (.746) as they enter Week 2 of their 12th varsity season. Santa Margarita's all-time home record is 55-13-1 (.804).

This is the Eagles' seventh game at Cal State Fullerton and second in a row. They are 3-0 as the road team and 5-1 (.833) overall at CSUF's Titan Field. They are also 2-1 in CIF Championship Games at this facility.

This is the first game between Santa Margarita and the Los Alamitos Griffins. The game will be the first ever for the Eagles on Fox Sports West and marks one of the most high profile games that the Eagles have ever played in. The Eagles are ranked 5th in CIF Division I and Los Alamitos is unranked, but did receive some votes.

The Eagles'.746 winning percentage and the Griffins' .718 percentage are among the three best in Orange County. (See "A Winning Tradition" herein.) The Griffins and Eagles are ranked 4th and 6th respectively in O.C.

Los Alamitos finished the 1999 season 11-2, and in first place in the Sunset League. They advanced to the CIF Division I semi-finals where they lost to Long Beach Poly 35-9. The Griffins won three CIF titles in the 1990's, and are expected to compete for the Sunset League and Division I titles in 2000. Los Al is coached by John Barnes.

With the win over Ayala, the Eagles are 9-3 (.727) in season opening games. They are 9-2 in Week 2 games and also 9-2 in home openers.

Head Coaches
Eagle Head Coach Jim Hartigan is 101-34-1 (.746) in his 12th season as varsity Head Coach. Overall Coach Hartigan has a 117-37-2 (.756) if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He was honored as the both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the Year. Coach Hartigan has directed his squads into the playoffs in ten of their 11 seasons and has never posted a losing season. Jim has coached in three CIF Championship Games, winning two, and several exciting games including two recognized as State Games of the Week during the 1998 season, a National Game of the Year (the 1997 CIF Championship Game) and the 1997 Orange County All-Star Game. The Griffins are led by 22nd-year coach John Barnes who is 187-57 (.766) at Los Alamitos.
