1993 EAGLES

Corona del Mar 14 - Eagles 7

NEWPORT BEACH, CA., October 8, 1993 – The roof caved in on the Eagles in their second league game due to three turnovers and 15 penalties for 134 yards.

The Sea Kings took advantage of the miscues and went 80 yards late in the fourth quarter to win, 14-7.

The drive was aided by three Eagle penalties before Aaron Perlmutter scored on a three-yard run.

On the previous drive it looked like the Eagles would put away the Sea Kings, but a costly penalty nullified a nine-yard touchdown pass from Derek Yankoff to Brian Finneran. As a result of the penalty, SM was forced to try a 40-yard field goal by Ryan Korinke which went wide.

The Eagles started on fire and scored on its first possession. Yankoff found Brian Finneran over the middle for a 13-yard score.

Corona del Mar scored at the end of the half on a one-yard run by J.R. Walz, but the PAT pass failed, leaving the Eagles ahead, 7-6.

The loss left the Eagles a game behind Irvine and Newport Harbor in the Sea View race.

"This is a team we should have beaten," Coach Jim Hartigan said. "That's what I am concerned about. This is a team that could take our playoff spot or win the league championship now."

Corona del Mar wins a shocker

NEWPORT BEACH – While the Corona del Mar defense fended off threat after threat from Santa Margarita, the Sea Kings' offense patiently waited Friday night.

Down to its last chance, the offense finally pulled together for its best drive of the game to steal a 14-7 Sea View League victory from previously unbeaten Santa Margarita at Newport Harbor High.

Trailing by one with 6:35 to play, the Sea Kings (3-2, 1-1) traveled 80 yards in 12 plays. The rugged running of J.R. Walz (7 carries, 44 yards) carried his team, including a key four-yard run on fourth-and-inches at the Eagles 8 with 2:36 left.

Two plays later, quarterback Aaron Perlmutter faked a dive to Walz and rolled untouched into the end zone from the 3 with 1:25 to go. After a timeout, Perlmutter lobbed a two-point coversion pass to Lindsay Johnson for a seven-point lead.

"Man, this is a big win," Corona del Mar coach Dave Holland said. "This one, we had to come back after a tough loss (to Irvine) and we came back to win."

Walz finished with 115 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Santa Margarita, (4-1, 1-1) ranked No. 8 in the county, helped the Sea Kings' final drive with three penalties, part of 15 penalties for 119 yards called against the Eagles.

A 46-yard kickoff return by Brian Griffin put the Eagles at midfield. But quarterback Derek Yankoff was sacked for the sixth time in the game and threw an incomplete pass before J.J. Di Cesare intercepted a pass with 28 seconds left. Santa Margarita started six drives in Corona del Mar territory during the game, but converted just one, in the first quarter. Brian Finneran caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Yankoff at the 6:20 mark.

The Eagles failed to capitalize on two first-half fumbles by the Sea Kings and missed two field goals in the second half.

Corona del Mar closed to within 7-6 late in the second quarter. Walz scored from the 1 with 42 seconds to go to cap a seven-play, 81-yard march. The key play was an 11-yard scramble by Perlmutter, coupled with a personal-foul penalty on the Eagles to put the ball at the Santa Margarita 11.
