Yankoff guides Santa Margarita, 24-10

MISSION VIEJO – Santa Margarita needed someone to step forward on offense and Friday night.

After tailback Chris Collins left the game in the second quarter with a bruised thigh, senior quarterback Derek Yankoff stepped up to the challenge.

He not only passed well, but he took control of the Eagles' running game, leading them to a 24-10 victory of Nore Dame (Sherman Oaks) at Saddleback College.

Yankoff rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another as Santa Margarita improved to 2-0. Notre Dame, ranked sixth in CIF-SS Division IV, dropped to 1-1.

Yankoff drove the Eagles to three first-half touchdowns, and Santa Margarita's defense held Notre Dame in check the rest of the way.

"His ability to scramble gets us out of a lot of situations," said Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan. "Derek is cool under pressure." Notre Dame got on the scoreboard first on a 49-yard field goal by junior Chris Sailer. Santa Margarita answered with a 70-yard drive, capped by an 11-yard run by Yankoff for a touchdown. Yankoff keyed the drive with a 31-yard run to the Notre Dame 21.

The Eagles scored on their next possession, driving 48 yards for a touchdown. Yankoff again controlled the drive himself, running 31 yards to the Notre Dame 6. He ran the ball in the 1-yard line on fourth down and Santa Maragrita took a 14-3 lead.
