Whittier Christian's Papazian runs over Santa Margarita
WHITTIER, CA., October 27, 1989 – Ron Papazian rushed for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass Friday night to lead Whittier Christian to a 45-7 Olympic League victory over Santa Margarita at Whittier College.
Papazian, a senior, scored on touchdown runs of 19 and 7 yards. He also caught a 57-yard scoring pass from Nick Sanchez.
The three touchdowns give Papazian 25 for the season, tops in the county.
The Heralds (8-0), 4-0) and Eagles (5-3, 3-2) played virtually an even game for most of the first half.
Whittier Christian, ranked No. 2 in Division IX, took the lead early in the second quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Mike Coelho.
It remained a 3-0 ballgame until 1:32 remained in the half, when Sanchez hit Alex Davila for a 26-yard touchdown pass and a 10-0 lead at the half.
But the Heralds ended the suspense in the second half, scoring on their first two possessions.
Papazian scored his first of the night on a 19-yard run with 10:39 left in the third to make it 17-0.
Three minutes later it was Scott Jordan's turn; he scored his ninth touchdown of the season on a 9-yard run.
The Heralds then finished it off, scoring three times in 3:12 of the fourth quarter.
Davila ended the Heralds' scoring when he recovered a fumble and took it in from 21 yards out.
The Eagles broke the shutout with 2:19 left when Josh Ireland broke through the middle for a 44-yard touchdown run.
