Santa Margarita records first varsity victory
MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 15, 1989 – Santa Margarita High School defeated Riverside's Jurupa Valley, 41-0, Friday night. It was the 1-year-old school's first varsity victory.
Santa Margarita (1-1) took control early in the first quarter from Jurupa (0-2), as quarterback Trevor Yankoff passed to Josh Ireland for a 1-yard touchdown only three minutes into the game.
Yankoff completed three passes for 83 yards and one touchdown before being replaced by sophomore Joe Farris in the second half.
"The sophomores played well, and this was a good chance for us to feel what it's like to be on the other side of the ball," Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said.
A 50-yard pass from Yankoff to Eric Brown in the second quarter started a 24-0 run and gave Santa Margarita a 14-0 lead. Travis Lucero followed with one of his five conversions. Ireland continued the run by rushing for a 77-yard touchdown.
With three seconds remaining in the third quarter, Louis Pavlovich stripped the ball from a Jurupa receiver and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.
