Eagles 42 - Centennial 7

Santa Margarita romps, 42-7, awaits decision on playoffs

MISSION VIEJO, CA., November 10, 1989 – There was a serious case of growing pains Friday night before about 800 spectators at Saddleback College.

Santa Margarita routed Centennial, a first-year school, 42-7, making the Huskies 2-8 on the season.

Now the Eagles (7-3) get their first taste of playoff anxiety while they wait until Sunday for the CIF to decide which of three teams will earn the remaining two at-large bids in Division IX.

The Eagles have a good shot because their three losses were to teams with a combined record of 28-2 (Trabuco Hills, Whittier Christian and Valley Christian). Santa Margarita finished third in the Olympic League at 4-2.

Santa Margarita won Friday's game even though junior quarterback Trevor Yankoff did not start because of disciplinary reasons.

Yankoff came off the bench to complete 5 of 6 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and run six times for 70 yards and another score.

Sophomore running back Josh Ireland became Santa Margarita's first 1,000-yard rusher when he broke free for a 64-yard run in the second quarter. He finished the regular season with 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns on 150 carries.

David Shearer had four receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular 21-yarder from Yankoff.
