Friday, November 17, 1989 - 7:30 p.m.

COACH: Jim Hartigan

RECORD: 7-3

LEAGUE FINISH: Third (4-2)

FIRST-ROUND GAME
Friday, 7:30 p.m. VS. Beaumont (8-2) @ Beaumont

PLAYOFF HISTORY
The Eagles, in their third year of existence and with a roster made up of sophomores and juniors, make their first CIF playoff appearance.

KEY STATISTICS
Running back Josh Ireland became the Eagles' first 1,000-yard rusher when he carried 140 times for 1,079 yards (7.7 yards a carry) and 11 touchdowns. Quarterback Trevor Yankoff passed for 954 yards and rushed for 367 yards. Yankoff passed for seven touchdowns and rushed for six. The Eagles' three losses were to teams with a combined record of 28-2 (Trabuco Hills, Whittier Christian and Valley Christian).

OUTLOOK
According to Hartigan, if the youthful Eagles continue to play as they have the last two weeks, things should go well in the playoffs. In the last two weeks, the Eagles beat Orange Lutheran and Centennial of Corona by a combined score of 84-7. While some observers might be surprised how quickly the Eagles reached the playoffs, it was a goal for Hartigan and the team at the start of the season. "We paid our dues last season with an extremely tough sophomore schedule. We wanted to be competitive and gain experience this season, and our ultimate goal was to reach the playoffs. We want to instill confidence in them – we hope they stay focused and not think about the pressure."

SANTA MARGARITA vs. BEAUMONT RECORDS
Santa Margarita (7-3, Atlarge, Olympic League) vs. Beaumont (8-2, 1st place, De Anza League)

GAME AT A GLANCE
Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan calls Beaumont a talented defensive team. Hartigan says the Cougars also have three good running backs and a quarterback who rushed for almost 700 yards. Beaumont tailback Dan Partridge rushed for 1,280 yards (6.7 yards a carry) and 20 touchdowns – third in Riverside County. Hartigan says his Eagles, making their first playoff appearance, could be peaking at the right time.
