Looking Forward
Mater Dei is the consensus No. 1 high school football team in the nation in virtually every poll ranking media outlet. The Monarchs have plenty of standout players returning from last year’s team that won championships in the top division of the CIF-Southern Section, CIF State and National Championship levels. On defense they have senior linebacker Nasir Wyatt, who was the Orange County Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and is the No. 1 player in the OCVarsity Hot 150 rankings of the county’s top players. Dash Beierly is the team’s new quarterback. The Washington commit is a transfer from Chaparral (Temecula). The Monarchs also have a new coach, Raul Lara, the former Long Beach Poly coach who was hired in late April.

Last SMCHS Win: 2011 - SMCHS won 28-20 (@ Saddleback College)
September 29, 2023 -- Santa Margarita Catholic opened 2023 Trinity League action by hosting nationally-ranked St. John Bosco (Bellflower) at Saddleback College. The Braves came to Mission Viejo in a cranky mood as they dropped their first nonleague game the previous game at Kahuku (Hawaii). It was their first nonleague defeat since 2017.

From the beginning, SJB was relentless and were able to thwart any threat offered by the young Eagles as they prevailed, 42-7. Sean Embree was a bright spot for the offense as nabbed five receptions including one for SMC’s only score. It was the junior’s third game with five-or-more receptions. John Gazzaniga’s scoring pass to Embree was his seventh of he season. On defense, senior linebackers Gage Burnett and Noah Sulick had seven tackles apiece.
