HIGHLIGHTS OF LAST WEEK’S GAME - @ MISSION VIEJO
With five challenging nonleague games on its slate and the usual five-game gauntlet of the unrivaled Trinity League, Santa Margarita Catholic commenced the 2024 season with a short trip to Mission Viejo. The Eagles’ schedule, once again, puts they and fellow league schools in the top-six spots for most difficult schedules in the nation (by end of season). Despite the close proximity (8 miles), SMCHS and the Diablos had not done battle in five years.
Between the four to five major prep coverage media outlets, each of them has marked the 10 game regular season schedule encountered by the Eagles as a “game of the week” in some fashion -- due to rivalry, placement in the local, state and national rankings or playoff implications.* This contest was no exception. No matter which poll you checked, the two combatants are clearly in the national landscape.
Unfortunately, SMCHS came into the contest with some key players battling injury. The dilemma quickly proceeded to assert itself in the outcome. The Eagles feel behind early and were never able to bounce back with any momentum shift. The Diablo’s speed and experience took advantage of the situation and rolled on. For SMC, Jonah Smith was out, Sean Embree nursing some discomfort and Elijah Robinson departing in the late first quarter.
Many of the newcomers demonstrated their talent and athleticism -- having fans and teammates clamoring for more and building upon for the remainder of the season schedule. This included Dash Fifita, Ca’ron Williams, Jaion Smith, Jayden Crowder, Elijah Vaikona and Ivrick Carrigan.
SMCHS has a quicker turnaround time than usual to prepare for anther tough road game. Playing on Saturday in the opener and then the following Friday cut their preparation schedule short, but Coach Rouzier and staff will make proper adjustments.
Eagle’s Highlights

- Freshman Grant Mosley registered one reception for 32 yards and became the third Mosley brother to suit-up for SMCHS all-time

- Dash Fifita led the team in total tackles with 10 in his first game with SMC

Team Notebook:
- Centennial opened the season at the Santa Ana Bowl last Thursday against defending National Champion Mater Dei and fell, 42-25.
- Huskies’ All-America quarterback Husan Longstreet missed that game. Reports are that he suffered a fracture in his foot three weeks ago and continues to deal with the injury. There has not been a timeframe from the staff as to his return to the lineup.
- Junior understudy Dominick Catalano took the reins and rolled with the offense. It is unknown at this time as to which quartreback will get the nod to start on Friday in the Inland Empire. Catalano, who saw limited time last season, was 17-of-32 (53.1%) for 189 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
- Catalano himself avoided injury early in the game when MD All-America linebacker Nasir Wyatt came from the blindside unabated and delivered a high hit, around the collarbone, and dropped to the ground.
- The Huskies started the game with two-consecutive turnovers and quickly trailed, 15-0. Junior running back Malachi Roby was a stabilizing presence for the offense. Roby elevated the Centennial running game, in Longstreet’s absence, by finishing with 81 yards on 14 carries (5.8 average).
- Centennial also played its season opener without three potential starters in the secondary. LaRue Zamorano II is out for several weeks with a shoulder injury. Kuron Jabari, Jr. and Boogie Williams are on a sit-out period after transferring.

2023 Game: SMCHS 34, Liberty 14 (@ Bakersfield) - Nonleague
Santa Margarita Catholic made the three-hour / 185-mile trek up to Bakersfield to take on strong Liberty club. The Patriots were the defending CIF-State Division 1-AA champions. After the first quarter of play, the game looked as if it would be a classic shootout as both schools displayed little defensive success -- allowing numerous long-distance plays. Tied at 14-14, the Eagles defense rose to a fever pitch and played its best three quarters of ball in some time. With the offense doing its job as well, SMCHS rolled to a 34-14 victory. Liberty opened the game with a flurry of activity, scoring two touchdowns during a 0:54 second stretch, they soon learned that pace was not sustainable. Part of the issue was that SMCHS was able to employ a no-huddle offense to change the game’s pace.
SMCHS scored the last 27 points in the game thanks to the dominant game enjoyed by Trent Mosley. The then talented sophomore took over the game and made a case for himself as the most dynamic playmaker in Southern California prep football. Lining up all over the field, Mosley rushed for two scores and caught two touchdown passes in the resounding win. Mosley’s touchdown passes were 83 and 10 yards in length, both from Hunter Melton. He totaled 227 yards of offense as the Eagles gained 471 as a team.
Another offensive weapon that is difficult for opponents to control, Sean Embree, had a beautiful 46-yard touchdown catch from Melton early in the game. Melton finished 17-of-25 (68.0%) passing for 316 yards and three touchdowns. Mosley tallied 187 receiving yards on nine catches (20.8 average) and on the ground mustered three carries for 40 yards (13.3 average). Embree had six catches for 124 yards (20.7 average). All of those statistical numbers for the three players are new career highs.
Defensively, Logan Hirou snagged one interception and now has three for the season. LeVar Talley contributed two tackles for loss and one sack. He and teammate Gage Burnett led the team with eight tackles.
