Last Game vs Servite
Santa Margarita Catholic looked continue its momentum as it hosted Servite last Friday. Once again, it was the “Jaxon Potter Show” as the quarterback threw for 376 yards (21-of-29, 74.2%) and a career-tying five touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a Trinity League win, 56-14. Potter is literally rewriting the record books at SMC, throughout the CIF-Southern Section and even the state of California. In 2022, he started off with a blaze and hasn’t taken his foot off the gas one bit.
Potter was complimented, as always, by a strong group of offensive weapons at his disposal. In addition, seldom-used running back Chase Jones had a coming-out party with the best game of his young career. Coming into the contest with just five career touches, the junior scored three touchdowns on seven touches. He gained 57 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns while he also collected two receptions and another touchdown.
SMCHS totaled 540 yards of offense as they broke the 500-plus threshold for the second time this season -- only exceeded by the 612 yards in the loss at Los Alamitos. The Eagles now approach producing nearly 400 yards per game. Last season, SMCHS exceeded 500 yards just once.
Back up QB Bekkem Kritza saw late game action and also threw a touchdown, giving the team six for the night, which tied the all-time team record for a single game. Receiving touchdowns were plentiful as they were notched by Bain Eiseman (2), Sean Embree, Emmett Mosley, Chase Jones and Brendan Brahm. Freshman back Skylar Lendsey had just four rush attempts, but gained 81 yards (20.3 average), with a long of 60. Emmett Mosley gained 127 yards receiving and Bain Eiseman chipped in with 99 yards. It was the first multi touchdown game of his career. LeVar Talley led the defense with one sack. Mater Dei completes the home schedule for SMCHS before they take on St. John Bosco to finish the regular season.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION HONOREE: CARSON PALMER
SMCHS Alum Carson Palmer Adds to List of Career Honors
Elected to the Inaugural California High School Football Hall of Fame
On August 15, the California Interscholastic Federation and Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation announced the names of the 100 players and 13 coaches who will honored in inaugural class of the new California High School Football Hall of Fame. The facility will officially be located at a space inside the iconic Rose Bowl and is an element of the Rose Bowl’s 100th anniversary this year. The venue is set to open in late-November 2022 -- during the week of the CIF-Southern Section Division I Championship game that will be held there on November 25, 2022. This will be the first time since 1944 that the game will be held in Pasadena at “America’s Stadium.”
With the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and National Football Foundation (NFF) playing a role in conjunction with Legacy, the project continues to shine a light on the key contributors to high school football in the Golden State. The founding premise was to honor the history, quality, and overall impact of players, coaches and integral moments that have shaped the landscape of high school football in California. Orange County was well represented in the initial class and the inductees include two men with Santa Margarita Catholic connections: alumni quarterback Carson Palmer and Head Coach Harry Welch. Tonight we honor Carson Palmer.
After a successful stint as a starter his junior year, Palmer started to field offers from such schools as USC, Notre Dame, Colorado and Miami (Florida). He followed up that stellar season with a remarkable senior season, cementing himself as one of the most touted players ever to come out of Santa Margarita Catholic. In his senior season, Palmer led Orange County with a 203.9 quarterback rating and was named First-Team All-Sea View League and All-CIF-Southern Section. The Eagles finished a perfect 14-0 and won their second-straight CIF Division V championship and were named State Division II champions. Palmer finished his high school career with 27 school records.
After high school, it was off to the University of Southern California where he was a four-year starter (1998, 2000-02). While there, Palmer set or tied 33 Pac-10 and USC total offense and passing records. As a senior in 2002, after a 21-year drought, he became USC’s fifth Heisman Trophy winner (and the first from the West Coast since 1981), as well as Troy's first quarterback winner ever. He also garnered the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, The Sporting News’ “Player of the Year,” CNN/SI “Player of the Year” and First-Team All-America from the Associated Press, Football Writers Association, CBS Sportsline and ESPN. In 2021 Palmer was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
As an NFL player, Palmer was All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowl selection during a strong 14-year career. Palmer went 38-21-1 during his final five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, which included leading the team to a spot in the NFC Championship Game during an MVP-caliber 2015 season. Palmer set a franchise record with 35 touchdowns and was named Second-Team All-Pro. Palmer spent five years with the Cardinals after two seasons with the Oakland Raiders and eight with the Cincinnati Bengals. Palmer holds numerous Bengals’ single-season records including completions, touchdowns, passing yards, touchdown passes in a game, highest passer rating and the team’s all-time best completion percentage. Palmer has the top three season completion totals and the top three passing yard seasons in Bengals history.

In Brief: The defending Trinity League, CIF-Southern Section, State Division and National Champion Monarchs are once again on a collision course with St. John Bosco for titles from all those outlets. The Braves and Monarchs are first-second in every ranking poll imaginable. MD drew first blood when they dealt a 17-7 setback to SJB two weeks ago. The Monarchs’ strengths on offense start with quarterback Elijah Brown, who passed for 2,581 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. The junior continued to excel as an on-field leader for the Monarchs, who claimed a state title and went 12-0 despite controversy from an alleged hazing incident. Brown is undefeated in his high school career as a starter -- 25-0. He is supported by a stellar offensive line anchored by touted juniors DeAndre Carter (6-5, 335) and Brandon Baker (6-5, 290). Mater Dei’s attack also features the new-look running back duo of Ajon Bryant and Jordon Davison, who combine speed and power. The team is inexperienced at wide receiver but has a strong junior in Jack Ressler (33 catches in 2021). The Monarchs’ defensive unit is unit is led by senior All-CIF linebacker Leviticus Su’a but overall it is young. Juniors Aydin Breland, a defensive tackle, Zabien Brown, a cornerback, and sophomore Nasir Wyatt are three other key defenders. The defense lost junior linebacker Tanner Williams to a season-ending knee injury, putting more focus on the Monarchs’ playmaking on defense.

In Brief: St. John Bosco began the 2022 regular season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country in most reliable polls. Those polls which didn’t have them No. 1, instead chose Mater Dei, had the Braves in at No. 2. The first matchup with the Monarchs didn’t go as expected as SJB fell, 1707. The Braves brought back 14 starters from last year’s team that was a disappointing 10-2 overall. The lot includes Louisville-bound quarterback Pierce Clarkson. As usual, Bosco also welcomed several high impact transfers. In some positions, such as the secondary, the Braves’ field what could be the best unit ever in the state and are recognized nationally. Over the last decade, the Braves have been no stranger to elite competition. This season, they travelled to the Dallas Metroplex area for a California versus Texas showdown. Bosco took on Allen High School in week one and won convincingly. The quality of the team is rooted in the seniors -- Class of 2023. The Braves are experienced at key positions and playing with a chip on their shoulders after a loss in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 semifinals. If one had to pick a top returning player it would be defensive end / tight end Matayo Uiagalelei, who was almost State Player of the Year as a sophomore but slipped back some spots last year due to the team finishing behind both Mater Dei and Servite (Anaheim) in the Trinity League and for the state. He has not committed to a college yet. With just one quarterback getting all of the reps this year, though, the team’s top player of the year candidate once this season is quarterback Pierce Clarkson.

HEAD COACH Anthony Rouzier
Anthony Rouzier begins his third season as the Head Varsity Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Prior to taking the reigns of the program in the spring of 2021, Rouzier coached at SMCHS for three seasons, first serving as the linebacker coach and then as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. The path to Head Coach started on August 27, 2020 when Rouzier was named on an interim basis. On February 5, 2021, Rouzier was named fulltime Head Coach by school President Andy Sulick.
Rouzier played collegiately at the University of Connecticut in 2005. There he was the first true freshman walk-on to start in the Division-era of the school. He then transferred to the University of Massachusetts as a scholarship athlete and was a member of two Colonial Athletic Conference championships teams. In the classroom, Rouzier earned All-Academic All-Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.
After his collegiate playing days, in 2014, Rouzier coached at Amherst Regional High School (Massachusetts) where he started as the linebacker coach and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator mid-season. Rouzier then proceeded to coach the outside linebackers at Winston-Salem State University (North Carolina) in the spring of 2015. Shortly after that, he returned as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, the University of Massachusetts. There he worked with the defensive backs in 2015 and linebackers in 2016.
Rouzier then found his way to Europe to coach with the Hamburg Huskies of the German Football League. There, in 2017, he was the interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. For his success, Rouzier was promoted to and accepted the Head Coaching position. Rouzier was also the Defensive Coordinator for the Under-17 Hamburg State All-Star team and worked with a recruiting service that helped European prospects earn Division 1 college scholarships in the United States. One of the other German coaches was current SMCHS assistant coach Sean Embree. It was Embree who convinced Rouzier that coaching at SMCHS would be worth his while and he soon found his way to South Orange County.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rouzier married his wife Elwira, who he met in Germany in 2018. He holds Juris Doctor and Master’s of Business Administration degrees from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-creator of a children’s book and non-profit organization that promotes health and wellness.
Over the recent offseason, Coach Rouzier and his talented staff have developed an innovative approach to expand the depth and breadth of the program. These activities and processes include:
- Individual player participation in over 55 camps, showcases and events throughout the West
- Scheduling almost one dozen 7-on-7 passing tournaments and scrimmages between all levels of the program
- Conducting multiple offsite team building and leadership events
- Improvement of communication pipeline with a myriad of team information being offered. For example: first-ever preseason team newsletter
- Development and support of dedicated student-produced media programming covering all aspects of the team.
