Last Game vs JSerra

After a devastating loss at Orange Lutheran to open the Trinity League schedule, where they won the statistical battle, Santa Margarita Catholic found themselves in the same boat when hosting JSerra Catholic. The Eagles amassed 341 yards of offense in the first half, including 341 passing, but after a big first quarter and quite second, the two teams were knotted at 21-21 at half.

After surrendering a touchdown in the third and falling behind 28-21, SMCHS manufactured the eventual game-winning drive three minutes in the fourth quarter. Taurian Nash pushed through the line on a one-yard dive for the score. Eagles Coach Anthony Rouzier had a decision to make. With two PAT attempts blocked last game and one already on the night, he chose to go for two. The gutsy call paid off as QB Jaxon Potter threaded the needle and completed a strike to Kyle Brody to give SMCHS a 29-28 lead and ultimately the victory.

Potter was 37-of-44 (84.1%) for 416 yards and two touchdowns. He broke his own school record for completions in a game and registered his third career 400-plus yard effort. Receiver Emmett Mosley hauled in 14 receptions for 155 yards -- a career high and one touchdown. The 14 catches is tied for second in school history. The pair each enjoyed one of he best statistical games in school history.

Potter

  • Passed the 400-yard plus passing yardage threshold for the third time in career (second of the season). Only the tenth 400-yard plus game in school history. Now ranks just one game behind all-time leader K.J. Costello.
  • Broke his own school record for pass completions in a single game with 37.

Mosley

  • Hauled in 14 pass receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown. The 14 catches are tied for second-most in a single game in school history.

The defense was able to make plays and hold upstart JSerra down for the triumph on Homecoming Night. They stood with LB Jacob Bower collecting 15 tackles (2 for loss) and an interception. LeVar Talley notched a sack, while defensive backs Donovan Comestro and Blake Wilson each had 11 tackles. Ben Durham had multiple tackles for a loss.

The Eagles look to raise their league mark to 2-1 as they host Servite in the second of three home contests in a row. No. 1 Mater Dei follows.

In Brief: The Friars are in the midst of a major rebuilding after their run last season to the Division 1 finals. That run was highlighted by a huge upset of St. John Bosco in the semifinals. Servite not only graduated several key players, including quarterback Noah Fifita, wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan and lineman Mason Graham, they lost some other strong contributors which transferred. Senior Julian Puche had the edge to take over the quarterback position, but the club has reverted to James Johnson and Leo Hannan to spark the offense at times. Quick wide receivers Ethan Scaffidi and Quinn Rosenkranz provide pass targets. Coach Troy Thomas also is high on sophomore running back Quiad Carr. The Friars’ top returners on defense are senior end Kitione Talavou and Scaffidi at cornerback.

Previous Game: Costa Mesa, California - November 12, 2021 - CIF-Southern Section Game No. 1 (Division 1 - Quarterfinals). The old adage in sports, especially football, is that it’s difficult to defeat the same team a second time around. That was exactly the case for Servite (Anaheim) as they hosted a hungry Santa Margarita Catholic team in the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. For 40 minutes SMCHS battled with state No. 3 Servite nearly to-to-toe. The Eagles dominated the game with physicality as they were still making effective gains into Friar territory when the wheels fell off. What was a 13-3 game at that point became a 34-3 final in the span of the final eight minutes. Junior defensive back Blake Wilson had a big game defensively with an interception, a forced fumble and 12 tackles (2 for loss). Sophomore LeVar Talley registered two tackles for a loss while Hero Kanu had one. Ben Durham recovered the fumble. The only points that the Eagles tallied came on a first quarter field goal by Romen Christensen -- 22-yards. Quarterback Jaxon Potter had an off night, failing to throw at least one touchdown pass for just the second time in 11 games this season. He was 16-of-40 (40.0%) for 159 yards.

In Brief: The defending Trinity League, CIF-Southern Section, State Division and National Champion Monarchs are once again on a collision course with St. John Bosco for titles from all those outlets. The Braves and Monarchs are first-second in every ranking poll imaginable. The Monarchs’ strengths on offense start with quarterback Elijah Brown, who passed for 2,581 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. The junior continued to excel as an on-field leader for the Monarchs, who claimed a state title and went 12-0 despite controversy from an alleged hazing incident. Brown is undefeated in his high school career as a starter -- 24-0. He is supported by a stellar offensive line anchored by touted juniors DeAndre Carter (6-5, 335) and Brandon Baker (6-5, 290). Mater Dei’s attack will also feature the new-look running back duo of Ajon Bryant and Jordon Davison, who combine speed and power. The team is inexperienced at wide receiver but has a strong junior in Jack Ressler (33 catches in 2021). The Monarchs’ defensive unit is unit is led by senior All-CIF linebacker Leviticus Su’a but overall it is young. Juniors Aydin Breland, a defensive tackle, Zabien Brown, a cornerback, and sophomore Nasir Wyatt are three other key defenders. The defense lost junior linebacker Tanner Williams to a season-ending knee injury, putting more focus on the Monarchs’ playmaking on defense.

HEAD COACH Anthony Rouzier

Anthony Rouzier begins his third season as the Head Varsity Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Prior to taking the reigns of the program in the spring of 2021, Rouzier coached at SMCHS for three seasons, first serving as the linebacker coach and then as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. The path to Head Coach started on August 27, 2020 when Rouzier was named on an interim basis. On February 5, 2021, Rouzier was named fulltime Head Coach by school President Andy Sulick.

Rouzier played collegiately at the University of Connecticut in 2005. There he was the first true freshman walk-on to start in the Division-era of the school. He then transferred to the University of Massachusetts as a scholarship athlete and was a member of two Colonial Athletic Conference championships teams. In the classroom, Rouzier earned All-Academic All-Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.

After his collegiate playing days, in 2014, Rouzier coached at Amherst Regional High School (Massachusetts) where he started as the linebacker coach and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator mid-season. Rouzier then proceeded to coach the outside linebackers at Winston-Salem State University (North Carolina) in the spring of 2015. Shortly after that, he returned as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, the University of Massachusetts. There he worked with the defensive backs in 2015 and linebackers in 2016.

Rouzier then found his way to Europe to coach with the Hamburg Huskies of the German Football League. There, in 2017, he was the interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. For his success, Rouzier was promoted to and accepted the Head Coaching position. Rouzier was also the Defensive Coordinator for the Under-17 Hamburg State All-Star team and worked with a recruiting service that helped European prospects earn Division 1 college scholarships in the United States. One of the other German coaches was current SMCHS assistant coach Sean Embree. It was Embree who convinced Rouzier that coaching at SMCHS would be worth his while and he soon found his way to South Orange County.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rouzier married his wife Elwira, who he met in Germany in 2018. He holds Juris Doctor and Master’s of Business Administration degrees from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-creator of a children’s book and non-profit organization that promotes health and wellness.

Over the recent offseason, Coach Rouzier and his talented staff have developed an innovative approach to expand the depth and breadth of the program. These activities and processes include:

  • Individual player participation in over 55 camps, showcases and events throughout the West
  • Scheduling almost one dozen 7-on-7 passing tournaments and scrimmages between all levels of the program
  • Conducting multiple offsite team building and leadership events
  • Improvement of communication pipeline with a myriad of team information being offered. For example: first-ever preseason team newsletter
  • Development and support of dedicated student-produced media programming covering all aspects of the team.
