St. John Bosco 56 - Eagle 12

Bosco Blows Past Eagles. Bosco of Bellflower scored early and often, and then kept scoring

MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 11, 2013 – Santa Margarita was on the receiving end of the Braves' offensive outburst. St. John Bosco handed the Eagles a 56-12 defeat in the Trinity League opener for both Friday night at Saddleback College.

The Braves, ranked No. 1 in the Pac-5, No. 2 in the state by CalHiSports.com and No. 6 in the nation by Student Sports, made it look easy as they rolled up 546 yards.

"It feels easy when I'm out of the game in the third quarter," St. John Bosco quarterback Josh Rosen said. “But we can't take anything lightly. We just have to play as if we're in the CIF championship going for a game-winning drive and we're down by three."

Usually, Rosen and the passing game are highlighted in the Braves' no-huddle attack. Rosen had a fine night passing, but the Braves (6-0, 1-0) relied on their ground game.

They piled up 325 rushing yårds and seven rushing touchdowns against the Eagles (3-3, 0-1), ranked No.4 in the county and No. 25 in the state.

Rosen had nine carries for 64 yards and scored on runs of 6, 9, 3 and 6 yards, rushing for four touchdowns for the first time.

"Usually, I like to throw the ball a little more than I run the ball, but you got to do what the team needs to win,” said Rosen who was also 20 of 25 for 215 yards and one touchdown.

St. John Bosco scored on its first play from scrimmage, when Sean McGrew broke a 64-yard touchdown run. The Eagles fumbled on the ensuing play from scrimmage and St. John Bosco's Jacob TuiotuMariner recovered at Santa Margarita's 13. McGrew scored on a 13-yard run on the next play and the Braves had a 14-0 lead 65 seconds into the game.

K.J. Costello scored a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs as Santa Margarita battled to stay in the game, but the Braves outscored the Eagles, 21-0, in the second quarter to take a 42-12 lead and put the game out of reach by halftime.

It was the worst home loss and league loss for the Eagles in school history. The Eagles lost to Trabuco Hills, 50-14, in their first game at Saddleback College in 1989 and they lost to Mater Dei, 57-28, in a Trinity League game in 2008.

McGrew finished with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and Shay Fields had 10 catches for 115 yards for the Braves.
