Dorsey - Game Notes
This Friday night the Eagles (0-2) host the Dorsey Dons (1-0) of the LA City Section. The game will be played at Aliso Niguel High School and kickoff is set for 7 pm. it is the second time the Eagles have played at this venue. In 1998 they defeated the Aliso Niguel Wolverines 28-14 in the Division IV Playoffs. This will be the 6th meeting between the Eagles and Dons and the first since 2007. The Eagles lead the all-time series 3-2. In their season opener last Friday night, the Dons defeated LA Fairfax 25-23. They are led by long-time Head Coach Paul Knox and will be making their third visit to Orange County to play the Eagles dating back to 2002.
Last week, the Eagles played a memorable contest, but suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of the nationally ranked Bishop Gorman Gaels. Despite overcoming a 10-point deficit in the last 5 minutes of regulation to force overtime, the Eagles fell 34-31 in double overtime. Kyle Sweet caught 13 passes for 294 yards and three scores, LKJ Costello passed for 443 yards and four TDs to lead the offense and Jonathan LaBonty and Grady Higgins recorded 17 tackles apiece to spearhead the Eagle's defensive effort.
During the game several spectacular plays were make and six school records were either set or tied including four by Kyle Sweet and two by KJ Costello. These included:
Kyle Sweet
Longest Reception: 95 yards (Tied with David Shearer, 1990 vs. Bell Gardens)
Most Yards receiving in a game: 294 (Broke John Minardi's mark of 242 set in 1997 vs. Fountain Valley)
TD receptions in a game: 3 (Tied several players including Minardi who did it five times)
Most Career 200-yard games: 2 (Broke the mark he shared with John Minardi and Mike O'Gorman)
KJ Costello
Most Yards passing in a game: 443 (Broke Carson Palmer's record of 413 set vs. Tustin in 1997)
Longest Pass: 95 yards (Tied the mark set by Trevor Yankoff vs. Bell Gardens in 1990)
There was a question as to a 14th and possibly even a 15th reception by Kyle (as counted by a reporter from Las Vegas); however, after a review of the game film these two plays were determined to be laterals and will go into the books as running plays and therefore Kyle ended up with 13 on the night. The school record for receptions in a game remains 14 and it's held by Brian Finneran who set the mark in 1993 and later played 10 years in the NFL with the Eagles and Falcons. After 2 games and 515 yards receiving Kyle is already more than 1/3 of the way towards breaking John Minardi's record of 1,469 yards set over 14 games in 1997.
