Bishop Amat - Game Notes
Week 7 is the second week of the “Holy Wars” of Serra League play and is a pivotal week for both the host Santa Margarita Eagles and Bishop Amat Lancers. Each comes into this contest with 3-3 overall records and 0-1 marks in Serra League play.
This game marks fifth meeting between the Eagles and Lancers. The Eagles hold a 3-1 series edge and are 1-1 against the Lancers at Saddleback College
Last year, The Eagles put on their most impressive performance since joining the Serra League as they limited the Lancers to minus seven yards of total offense and two first downs and registered seven sacks in a 27-3 victory at Kiefer Stadium. Leading the way was Matt Rupp who had a record tying four sacks. In 2002, the Lancers ground out 398 yards rushing, forced four second half turnovers, and returned an onsides kick for a touchdown as they turned a tight 9-7 fourth quarter lead into a decisive 37-20 win at Saddleback College.
In 2000, the Eagles used 164 yards rushing from sophomore Ashton White to jump out to a 21-6 lead, but needed a game saving stop on a two-point conversion play by senior LB Tyler Thompson with 2:28 remaining to defeat the Lancers at Kiefer Stadium. In 1999, the Lancers arrived at Saddleback College with a 5-0 record and were ranked No. 17 in the nation. At the time it was the highest profile game the Eagles had ever played in. On this night the Lancers couldn’t stop the Eagles balanced attack as senior RB Jimmy Herzog rushed for 118 yards and three TDs while QB Chris Rix completed nine of 14 passes for 147 yards.
The Lancers are 3-3 on the season after a tough 17-14 loss to Loyola. Bishop Amat isn’t ranked in this weeks CIF-SS Division I Top 10 but they join the Eagles as a team that received some votes. The Lancers are led by 6th-year coach Mike DiFiori who is 33-28 (.541) at Bishop Amat and 1-3 against the Eagles.
