2004 EAGLES

Foothill - Game Notes

Homecoming 2004 has arrived and the Foothill game marks the Eagles second home game of the 2004 season and final non-league contest. Next week the Eagles usher in Serra League play as they host Mater Dei at Saddleback College for the first time.

The Foothill contest is the Eagles first against a Sea View League opponent since they lost 27-24 to Woodbridge in the Division VI Championship Game in 1998. The Eagles won two SVL Championships (1996 and 1997) and have posted an all-time record of 31-12 against teams from the SVL.

Prior to the loss to Dorsey in Week 2 the Eagles had gone 17-1 in their past 18 non-league games at Saddleback College dating back to 1996 and 29-2 (.935) all-time.

The Knights are 2-2 on the season after a 28-22 win over El Modena in Week 4. They opened their season with a convincing 33-16 win over cross-town rival Tustin; however, they fell to both Tesoro and Mater Dei before rebounding for the victory last week. Last year Foothill finished 8-3 and in a three-way tie for first place in the Sea View League with Irvine and Aliso Niguel. They lost to Hacienda Heights Wilson 24-21 in Round 1 of the CIF-SS Division VI Playoffs. The Knights are led by fifth-year coach Doug Case who is 30-34-1 (.469) at Foothill.

This is the second game between Santa Margarita and the Foothill Knights and their first meeting at Saddleback College. In 1992, Santa Margarita’s season came to a crushing end as the upset minded Foothill Knights used 190 yards rushing and three touchdowns from QB Steve Wielandt to post an exciting 35-28 win over the visiting Eagles in Round 2 of the CIF-SS Division IV Playoffs before a capacity crowd at Tustin High School. Seniors Chris Tiernan (15 carries for 154 yards and one TD and 10 tackles), and Sean O’Brien (14 of 30 for 171 yards and three Tds) led the Eagle effort.
