Orange Lutheran - Game Notes

The Orange Lutheran marks the Eagles second road game of the season and first against an Orange County opponent.

The game is a match up of two of the winningest programs in Orange County history. The Eagles currently rank third (.723) and Lancers tenth (.632). Please see “A Winning Tradition” herein.

The Eagles have done well over the years against teams from Orange County posting a 72-33-1 record including four straight pre-league wins.

The Eagles are also 6-2 vs. non-Catholic private schools in their history.

The Eagles have done particularly week in Week 3 action posting a 14-1 mark and have not lost a Week 3 game since their 38-27 loss to Servite in 1996.

The Eagles are off to a 1-1 start for the first time since 2000 after a 27-7 defeat at the hands of the Dorsey Dons. In Week 1 they defeated the St. Paul Swordsmen 14-3 at “The Pit”.

The Eagles are not ranked in this weeks Orange County Sportswriters poll or the CIF-SS Division I Top 10.

This is the second game between Santa Margarita and the Orange Lutheran Lancers. In 1989, The Eagles hosted the Lancers at Saddleback College and won 42-0 behind the running of Josh Ireland (18 carries for 119 yards, three TDs) and passing of Trevor Yankoff ( four of 10 for 103 yards and a TD).

The Lancers are 1-1 on the season losing 21-7 to Mater Dei in Week 1 and defeating Long Beach Millikan 35-3 last week. They finished 12-1 in 2003 and won the Empire League title, before losing to Los Altos 21-17 in the Division VI Finals. They are led by Head Coach Jim Kunau who is 110-30-3 in his 12 years at Orange Lutheran.
