2004 EAGLES

Loyola - Game Notes

The Eagles face a must win road game in Week 10 for the first time since 1994 when they were 4-5 and defeated Irvine 21-18 to finish 5-5.

This is the fourth game between Santa Margarita and the Loyola Cubs, and their first meeting at Pierce College. The Eagles are 0-1 on the road vs. Loyola losing 7-0 at Glendale High School in 2002.

Last year, Trason Bragg rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Scott Deke passed for 124 yards and rushed for two scores himself as the Cubs wore down the Eagles and pulled out a 21-7 victory. In 2002, Cub running back Bo Renaud rushed for 140 yards and scored the games only touchdown from one yard out as the Loyola Cubs avenged their 2001 defeat at the hands of the Eagles with a 7-0 win before 3,500 at Glendale High School. In 2001, the Eagles forced three turnovers and blocked a punt, and QB Marshall Tharpe threw two touchdown passes as the Eagles registered an impressive 21-14 win over the previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Loyola Cubs at Saddleback College. (Full recaps of all previous games are included herein.)

Loyola is 8-1 and they are coming off a commanding 34-3 over St. John Bosco. They have already been crowned League Champs by virtue of their 17-14 win over Mater Dei. Last year they finished 11-3 and won the CIF-SS Division I Championship. The Cubs have one of the most storied programs in California history winning 37 league titles, five CIF Championships and one national title (1975) while going 578-236-37 (.701) since 1924. Their 578 documented wins are sixth best in California history; however, it is believed that they have actually won at least 21 more games due to incomplete records between 1897 and 1923. They are led by legendary coach Steve Grady who is 268-75-6 (.780) in 29 seasons at Loyola including a 2-1 mark against the Eagles.
