LAST WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS VS. JONES
The defending CIF-Southern Section - Division 1 and State Open Division champions opened the season at home against a quality interstate opponent -- Jones High School (Orlando). Santa Margarita Catholic High School (SMCHS) looked to still be stacked with talent in year two under Head Coach Carson Palmer as they demonstrated physicality, experience and confidence last Friday night as the Eagles rolled to a 27-0 victory.
The two prevailing story lines were 1.) the defensive effort and 2.) contributions by incoming freshmen. SMCHS started four freshmen, including three on defense. That defense gelled quickly as they shutdown the Tigers’ offensive efforts in every facet. Here is a summary of the Eagles’ notable efforts:

Notes:
- The 9 sacks establishes a new single-game record for Eagles’ football
- The last shutout for SMCHS came in the “2020 season,” with those season’s games played in spring 2021 due to COVID-19. That blanking was dealt to JSerra Catholic, 42-0. The Eagles are now 7-6 versus out-of state opponents all-time.

The offense saw a new quarterback at the helm that utilized all of his available weapons. Fletch Palmer scanned the field and found six different receivers en route to his 242 yards passing. Kiyan Callis was the favored target in this game with 9 pass receptions for 105 yards (11.7 average) and one score. Grant Van Raaphorst caught a long touchdown pass of 39 yards in the fourth quarter. Overall, the offense gained 364 yards of total offense.

Head Coach Carson Palmer
Head Coach Carson Palmer excelled in both football and basketball while here at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. By his senior year in 1997, he was considered one of the top quarterbacks in the country, as he threw for 2,685 yards and 31 touchdowns while leading his team to its second-straight Southern Section title. The club was undefeated at 14-0 and Palmer finished his career with a stellar 23-1 mark as a starter. He garnered the Southern Section Division V Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player award, as well as, established an astounding 27 school records and had his No. 3 jersey retired.
It was off to the University of Southern California where he was a four-year starter. While there, Palmer set or tied 33 Pac-10 and USC total offense and passing records. As a senior in 2002 he became USC’s fifth Heisman Trophy Award winner. It was the first time since 1981 that the prestigious honor was bestowed to a player from the West Coast and Troy's first-ever from the quarterback position.
In that same season, Palmer led the Trojans to a share of the Pac-10 title. He was also a consensus First-Team All-America or Player of the Year selection from multiple outlets including CNNSI College Football, the Football Writers Association of America, CBS Sportsline.com and ESPN.com. Palmer also earned Pac-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year, USC's Most Valuable Player award and the Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented to the top senior quarterback in the nation.
Palmer was the first overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals, for whom he played eight seasons. During his tenure in Cincinnati, he helped lead the team to its first winning season and playoff appearance in 15 years and was named to two Pro Bowls. After being traded to the Oakland Raiders where he stayed for two seasons (2011-12), Palmer started 24 games and threw for 6,771 yards and 35 touchdowns. In 2012, Palmer amassed 4,018 passing yards, ranking as one of the highest in franchise history.
Palmer then joined the Arizona Cardinals where he finished out his NFL career from 2013 to 2017. He peaked in 2015 by throwing for 4,671 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the franchise to a 13-3 record and an NFC Championship Game. Palmer was also selected to his third Pro Bowl, and selected as Second-Team All-Pro. Palmer retired following the 2017 regular season after setting several franchise passing records.

Walk-Green led Centennial with 10 interceptions, also the most in the state. He returned five of those for touchdowns, while adding one on a fumble return and one more on a punt return. Walk-Green also coined a new football term: the “pick seven.” That’s because after would get a pick six, he would stay on the field and kick the extra point. Walk-Green was 63-of-65 (96.9 %) on PAT conversions attempts and 4-of-5 on field goal attempts (80.0 %). Also led his team in total tackles.
