HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK’S GAME vs Centennial
Santa Margarita Catholic High School (SMCHS) was 5-7 last season and 5-6 the year before. This season alone they have 10 wins alone and look for the most-prized of all -- No. 11. Flashback to Thursday, December 12, 2024, the new era of SMCHS football commenced. School President Andy Sulick announced that class of 1998 alum Carson Palmer was the football program’s new head coach.
The most notable words from Sulick’s press release were “His football pedigree is unmatched. As an alum he understands the culture.” This resonated among the alumni, school, local community and fans. The buzz created hadn’t been at this height since the Harry Welch championship era of the late 2010s.
Palmer put together an all-star coaching staff of many former NFL players, survived playing the toughest schedule in the nation and has his team peaking at the right time. Now, almost one year to that day -- 366 days -- Palmer and his Eagles play for the CIF State - Division 1 championship. This opportunity arrives after a three-game postseason run that is the envy of those outside and looking in.
Championship Game Story
It was a noteworthy display of skill, determination and fierce play by SMCHS which delivered a dominating victory over the Centennial Huskies, 42-7, to secure the CIF-Southern Section - Division 1 championship title. The game took place at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena and marked the first time the Eagles reached this pinnacle since 2011. The bright lights of the Rose Bowl witnessed not only a victory but one of the most overall, complete championship performances in Southern Section history
The Eagles dominated from the first tick of the clock, immediately taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The first two scores were set up by great field position delivered by the SMCHS return team. Trent Mosley then emerged and took control of the field. This included 80- and 91-yard touchdown receptions. He also tallied two short scores on the ground that brought his all-purpose total to 304 yards. Luke Gazzaniga and Ryan Clark also joined the party as they hit pay dirt late in the first half to essentially put the contest on ice, 28-7. The offensive line had another great night protecting quarterback Trace Johnson. The fivesome included Adam Iloilo, Raymond Jacobs, Aaron Klatt, Chris Kraninger and Niniva Nicholson
The defense set an intense tone, as they were airtight on Centennial’s first three possessions, suffocating any traction the Huskies tried to establish. This was a curtain Centennial would never be able to penetrate, except for a lone touchdown in the second quarter. Isaia Vandermade, Leki Holani, Dash Fifita, Ca’ron Williams and company limited the Huskies to fewer than 200 yards of offense. The Eagles delivered seven sacks, 13 tackles for loss, one interception and three forced fumbles.

- Last time SMCHS won three playoff games in a single postseason and also in succession was in 2011
- SMCHS has now strung together a streak of five wins-in-a-row. CIF-SS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME & POSTSEASON NOTEBOOK
- Trent Mosley was sidelined with an injury when Santa Margarita Catholic (SMCHS) defeated Centennial 33-27 in overtime in the second game of this season.
- The fourth quarter was played with a running clock, this after Ca’ron Williams intercepted a pass from Dominick Catalano and Mosley scored again with 0:38 seconds left in the third period to put the contest out of reach.
- The SMCHS defense dominated the Huskies as they went for the conversion on fourth down twice while inside the Eagles' 10-yard line, but were stuffed both times.
- SMCHS won 42-7, which is the largest point discrepancy in the CIF-SS’s highest division championship since 1993 -- Eisenhower (Rialto) defeated Mater Dei 56-3 in the Division 1 in the finale.
- The 35-point margin of victory is the second-most lopsided CIF-Southern Section playoff loss for Centennial since Coach Matt Logan took over in 1997. The only one worse was a 52-14 loss to St. John Bosco back in 2019.
- This is the fourth section title for Santa Margarita Catholic and Carson Palmer has had a hand in three as a player and coach.
- With his CIF-Southern Section championship, SMCHS Head Coach Palmer has accomplished a rare dual-feat. He joined Troy Thomas (Crespi) and Bruce Rollinson (Mater Dei) as the only coaches to have won CIF-Southern Section title at their alma mater as a coach and player.
- SMCHS’s Offensive Coordinator Lenny Vandermade was head coach at St. Ignatius Prep (San Francisco) last season and guided the Wildcats to the CIF-Central Coast Section (CCS) Open Division championship and a Nor Cal Bowl appearance.
- The most games played at one venue by SMCHS is Saddleback College in Mission Viejo

Short History of De La Salle Football
De La Salle High School (DLS) holds the national record 151-game winning streak spanning from 1992 to 2004. The streak occurred under the leadership of Bob Ladouceur, who began coaching at the school in 1979. It ended when they were defeated on September 4, 2004, by Bellevue High School (Washington), outside Seattle. DLS finished the 2007 football season 13-0 and as state champions. In 2009, DLS defeated Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 28-14 to win the state title again. In 2010, DLS topped Servite, ranked No. 7 in the nation, 48-8, to win the state title game for a second-straight year.
During the winning streak, De La Salle was named national champion in seven different seasons -- once by ESPN (1994), five times by USA Today (1998, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), and once by the National Sports News Service (1999).
The Spartans have been named national champions by ESPNRISE.com (formerly Student Sports) six times, including four-straight years (2000-03). They have also been honored as the top team in California 19 times (1992, 1994-2003, 2007, 2009-2012, 2014-2015). The Spartans have triumphed in 35-consecuitve CIF-North Coast Section (NCS) championship games -- every season since 1992. In addition, they garnered the NCS title in seven of the nine seasons prior to that.
In somewhat recent years, the team has won the California Open Division State Championships six times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015). They have appeared in the Open Division state title game every year from the founding of the division in 2008 until 2019. Prior, they had competed in Division I, where they were the 2007 State Champions and the 2006 and 2008 runner-up.
From 1991 to 2021, DLS had a streak of 318 games without a loss when playing Northern California schools (going 316-0-2). This ended on September 10, 2021, when they lost to Saint Francis High School of Mountain View. The Lancers defeated the Spartans in the closing seconds of the game by the score of 31-28.
“The Duel at Diablo”
- On October 24, 2003, ESPN2 televised a game with national poll rankings and championship implications. Dubbed “The Duel at Diablo,” it pitted Evangel Christian Academy (Shreveport, Louisiana) and De La Salle (Concord, California). The game started at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time -- prime time on the East Coast. It was ESPN’s first telecast of a regular-season high school football game since the 1980s. The game was played at Diablo Valley College (DVC) in Pleasant Hill, California, not far from the De La Salle campus.
- The game was played at DVC because Paragon Marketing wanted a high-school type atmosphere, not a huge stadium. It was a complete sellout crowd of 7,500.
- It was, and still is, common knowledge in ESPN circles that if the De La Salle (who started the season with a 139-game win streak) had not agreed to play, then no future high school football contests were going to attempted.
- The Spartans rejected an initial proposal to play the game in Louisiana. DLS assistant coach Terry Eidson, who scheduled the nonleague games for the school, said they (DLS) don’t want to become a “traveling circus.”
- De La Salle won the game 27-10 and notched their 145th-consecutve victory during “The Streak.”
Historical Note
De La Salle was the first high school from the United States to ever play a game in Europe when it faced the NFL Academy (London, UK) on October 8, 2024 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Spartans prevailed easily 31-9. The Academy scored a touchdown on the last play of the game. The NFL Academy is a player development program for the League -- with one located in London and the other in Munich, Germany. The trip was funded by Nike.
