RECAP OF LAST WEEK @ Orange Lutheran
Trailing 28-7 to Orange Lutheran late in the third quarter, Santa Margarita Catholic made a run as it posted two touchdowns. Trent Mosley scored on a two-yard run just before the end of the period and quarterback John Gazzaniga scored on a 14-yard run to cut the lead to 28-21 with 3:10 remaining. The Lancers were able to march out of their territory and run the clock out to preserve a 28-21 victory. The Eagles actually took a 7-0 lead only to see the Lancers go on a 28-0 unanswered run over the next two quarters to take control. The duel was tied 7-7 at halftime before the OLu run.
Gazzaniga led an opening possession and then found Sean Embree on a lofty a 20-yard touchdown toss to cap a 64-yard scoring drive. It was Gazzaniga’s eighth touchdown in four games with SMC. Later a bit of trickery was invoked as offensive tackle Jacob Maiava scored on a two-yard run with 0:09 seconds left in the third. Gazzaniga then romped on a 14-yard run with 2:55 left in the contest as the Eagles as the Eagles fell short. SMC ended with 338 yards total yards of offense.

Eagles-Lions Rewind: 2022 Regular Season Contest
After a devastating loss at Orange Lutheran to open the Trinity League schedule, where they won the statistical battle, Santa Margarita Catholic found themselves in the same boat when hosting JSerra Catholic. The Eagles amassed 341 yards of offense in the first half, but after a big first quarter and quite second, the two teams were knotted at 21-21 at half.
After surrendering a touchdown in the third and falling behind 28-21, SMC manufactured the eventual game-winning drive three minutes in the fourth quarter. Taurian Nash pushed through the line on a one-yard dive for the score. Eagles Coach Anthony Rouzier had a decision to make. With two PAT attempts blocked in the previous game and one already on this night, he chose to go for two. The gutsy call paid off as quarterback Jaxon Potter threaded the needle and completed a strike to Kyle Brody to give the Eagles a 29-28 lead and ultimately the victory.
Potter was 37-of-44 (84.1%) for 416 yards and two touchdowns. He broke his own school record for completions in a game and registered his third career 400-plus yard effort. Receiver Emmett Mosley hauled in 14 receptions for 155 yards -- a career high and one touchdown. The 14 catches is tied for second in school history. The pair each enjoyed one of he best statistical games in school history.
The defense was able to make plays and hold upstart JSerra down for the triumph on Homecoming Night. They stood with linebacker Jacob Bower collecting 15 tackles (2 for loss) and an interception. LeVar Talley notched a sack, while defensive backs Donovan Comestro and Blake Wilson each had 11 tackles. Ben Durham had multiple tackles for a loss.

Eagles-Friars Rewind to 2022:
Santa Margarita 56, Servite 14
Mission Viejo, October 14, 2022 -- Santa Margarita Catholic looked continue its momentum as it hosted Servite in mid October. Once again, it was the “Jaxon Potter Show” as the star quarterback threw for 376 yards (21-of-29, 74.2%) and a career-tying five touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a Trinity League win, 56-14. In 2022, Potter literally rewrote the record books at SMC, throughout the CIF-Southern Section and even the state of California. He started off with a blaze and didn’t take his foot off the gas one bit.
Potter was complimented by a strong group of offensive weapons at his disposal. Seldom-used running back Chase Jones had a coming-out party with the best game of his young career. Coming into the contest with just five career touches, the junior scored three touchdowns on seven touches. He gained 57 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns while he also collected two receptions and another touchdown.
SMC totaled 540 yards of offense as they broke the 500-plus threshold for the second time of the season -- only exceeded by the 612 yards in the loss at Los Alamitos.
Receiving touchdowns were plentiful as they were notched by Bain Eiseman (2), Sean Embree, Emmett Mosley, Chase Jones and Brendan Brahm. Freshman back Skylar Lendsey had just four rush attempts, but gained 81 yards (20.3 average), with a long of 60. Emmett Mosley gained 127 yards receiving and Bain Eiseman chipped in with 99 yards. It was the first multi touchdown game of his career. LeVar Talley led the defense with one sack.
