St. John Bosco 54 - Eagles 14
Santa Margarita can't solve St. John Bosco
MISSION VIEJO, CA., November 18, 2016 – During the week, Santa Margarita coach Rich Fisher called the Eagles’ first game against St. John Bosco, a 47-10 loss on October 14, the turning point of their season.
Santa Margarita’s second matchup with Bosco was its season’s ending point.
St. John Bosco stifled Santa Margarita defensively and scored four touchdowns of 70 yards or longer in a 54-14 win in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 second-round game on Friday at Saddleback College.
“If you’re going to beat a good team at this stage of the game, especially in the playoffs,” Fisher said, “you’re going to have to do everything right. Our inability to move the ball, keeping the defense out there and their explosive plays were the real difference in the game.”
St. John Bosco (10-2) advances to the semifinals to host a rematch of last season’s Pac 5 Division final against Centennial of Corona (11-1).
“Four straight years against those guys,” Bosco coach Jason Negro said. “We certainly embrace the opportunity. Hopefully we’ll be able to even the series. It’s 2-1 them right now.”
Santa Margarita (7-5) earned only three first downs in the first half, two on offensive plays and another on a penalty.
First-round hero Chad Magyar was held to just 3 yards rushing on 10 first-half carries, and 51 yards on 17 carries in the game.
“We took a lot of pride in (the defense) this week,” Negro said. “(Santa Margarita) had been a different team in the second half of the season, in terms of running the ball. Our kids said we’re not going to fall into the same trap. We’re going to play physical up front and make them beat us with the pass. They weren’t able to do it.”
Bosco built up its lead scoring on five consecutive possessions.
Re-al Mitchell threw a 42-yard screen pass to Kristian Gilbert, scored on a 3-yard run and threw a 34-yard TD pass to Terrell Bynum for a 21-0 lead.
Mitchell threw a 76-yard touchdownpass to Berkeley Holman. Terrance Beasley ran in a 73-yard touchdown, and Stephan Blaylock returned an interception 30-yards for a 41-0 lead.
Mitchell also threw a 75-yard TD pass to Gilbert late in the third quarter.
