Santa Margarita gets backup help
MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 22, 2010 – Backup quarterback Johnny Stanton threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 80 yards and a third TD in helping Santa Margarita remain undefeated in the Trinity League with a 35-14 victory over JSerra on Friday night at Saddleback College.
Stanton, a sophomore, got the start ahead of Adam Young who suffered a shoulder injury last week against Orange Lutheran.
The Eagles (6-1, 2-0) scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead at the half.
After a fumble recovery by Parker Graham on the opening drive by JSerra (5-2, 0-2), Stanton led the - Eagles on a 67-yard, six play drive, capped by his 35yard TD pass to Logan Sweet.
Following a Lions punt, Santa Margarita drove 51 yards in four plays, the last one a 3-yard run by Cory Thomson.
JSerra quarterback Jake Hall, who did not start, came into the game in the third series, but the Eagles defense held and the Lions were forced to punt.
Santa Margarita marched 89 yards in 12 plays with Ryan Wolpin scoring from 3 yards out.
JSerra scored both of its touchdowns in the third. Nick Thomas returned an interception 36 yards to put the Lions on the board, and Joey Kimpler, who led JSerra with 148 yards rushing, added a 5-yard TD run.
