Eagles 63 - Canyon 10
Santa Margarita scores 63 points against Canyon
ORANGE, CA., September 24, 2010 – Santa Margarita tied a school record for points, scoring 56 consecutively from the second quarter on, to rout Canyon, 63-10, at Fred Kelly Field on Friday night.
Quarterback Adam Young ran and passed for four touchdowns to lead the Eagles assault.
The scores included a 3-yard dive and 71-yard pass to receiver Logan Sweet during a nine-play sequence in which Santa Margarita (3-1) scored three times, taking the lead and then running away from the undermanned Comanches, who still were without starting quarterback Beau Perry.
Canyon (1-3) held a 10-7 quarter lead at the end of the first, thanks to some hard running by Travon Cox, who had 91 yards on the night.
Kicker Marco Maniaci made a 25-yard field goal to open the scoring, and he also picked up a botched snap to run for a first down, leading to a Marcus Sanchez 8-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Meysam Alizadeh.
However, the second quarter was not so blessed for Canyon. After Young’s short run gave the Eagles a 14-10 lead, defensive back Johnny Stanton picked up a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a score.
After Canyon went three and out on their ensuing drive, Young hit Sweet for the long score, and Santa Margarita (3-1) was off and running.
