Santa Margarita takes down Carson, 56-14
MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 17, 2010 – Carson came into its intersectional clash against Santa Margarita on Friday with the momentum of two early season victories and a No. 19 ranking in the Southland by The Times, but the Eagles deserved all the accolades after a 56-14 victory at Saddleback College.
Santa Margarita quarterback Adam Young completed all three of his touchdown passes in the first half, and the Eagles forced a turnover, recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and made a fourth-down stop on the way to a 42-7 halftime lead.
“It was a total shock,” Santa Margarita Coach Harry Welch said of the lopsided nature of the victory. “They have speed and quickness that we just can’t touch. On the other hand, I believe we’re a good football team.”
Even with leading rusher Cory Thomson sidelined by a high ankle sprain early in the game, the Eagles (2-1) scored on all five of their first-half drives. Things were going so well that a busted play turned into a five-yard gain when 6-foot-6, 254-pound lineman Max Tuerk took a lateral from Young and chugged up the field for a first down.
Young finished the game completing nine of 15 passes for 129 yards, and sophomore running back Ryan Wolpin rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries. Wolpin also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass.
In a sign of things to come for Carson (2-1), quarterback Justin Alo had his first pass of the game intercepted and wasn’t able to sustain many drives. He completed 18 of 31 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.
“Sometimes, you take a lump upside the head and you learn from it,” Carson Coach Elijah Asante said.

Eagles get offensive to beat Carson
MISSION VIEJO – After an emotional loss in the "Rumble at the Ranch" last week against Tesoro, the duo of quarterback Adam Young and running back Ryan Wolpin ignited an impressive offensive display that helped Santa Margarita get back on the winning track.
Young threw three first half touchdown passes, while Wolpin rushed for 110 yards and scored three touchdowns, as the Eagles dominated Carson, 56-14, Friday night in a non league game at Saddleback College.
"We wanted to use last week as motivation and take it to Carson this week," Wolpin said. "We capitalized on their mistakes and want to continue to play our best."
It was the second time this season the Eagles (2-1) scored 56 points, which is tied for third most points in a game in school history.
"We played without turning the ball over and with focus and intensity," Eagles coach Harry Welch said. "We made plays and played without making big mistakes. That was one of the more impressive efforts I've ever had from a team early in the season against a talented opponent."
It was the Eagles defense that set up the first points of the game. On the game's opening play, Colts quarterback Justin Alo's pass was intercepted by defensive back River Cracraft.
The Eagles' ensuing drive culminated in an 8-yard touchdown run by Cory Thomson, giving Santa Margarita a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles made it 14-0 when senior receiver Logan Sweet caught a slant pass from Young over the middle for a 21-yard touchdown.
