Eagles 26 - Kealakehe 0

KAILUA-KONA, HI., August 26, 2005 – John Angelo rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown while Ross Cumming recorded 14 tackles and scored a touchdown of his own to lead the Eagles to a convincing 26-0 win over Kealakehe high before a crown of 2,500 at Waverider Stadium in Kialua-Kona Hawaii. The win improved the Eagles (1-0) to 10-0-1 in their past eleven season openers while the Waveriders fell to 1-1 on the season.

After punting on their opening possession the Eagles stopped the hosts on downs at the Eagle 29. On the next play John Angelo broke off a 35-yard run to give the Eagles a first down at the Kealakehe 36. After moving it to the Waverider 13 QB Jon Daniels found TE Ross Cumming on a 13-yard scoring pass with 1:02 left in the first quarter. Speedy multi-purpose player Ryan Maxwell showed off his wheels as he raced around right end on an errant snap on the PAT to put Santa Margarita up 8-0. The Waveriders used their multi-dimensional offense to get to their 48 where Andrew Johnson and Fred Carrera teamed up to force a key sack on third down and force the Waveriders to punt. The Eagles got to work immediately as Angelo ran for five then 11 yards before Daniels scrambled for 26 yards and a first down at the hosts 32. Chris Spangenberg ran for seven and nine before Daniels found Thomas Hull on a 16-yard scoring toss to make it 15-0 with 5:58 left in the half. The Waveriders used the remainder of the quarter to grind out four first downs before a 40-yard field goal attempt sailed wide at the gun.

In the opening drive of the third quarter the Waveriders used a 69-yard run by Fetu Iongi on a fake punt to set up a first-and-goal at the Eagle five. The Eagles held firm as a fourth down pass by Tai Papalii from the six fell incomplete. The Eagles got right to work as Angelo broke off a 12-yard run to the 18. On third and one from the 27 Matt Meyer picked up a first down with a seven-yard gain. After Daniels was sacked he found Cumming all alone in the flat on second down. The 210-pound senior took advantage of key blocks and used a series of stiff-arms, moves and foot speed to race 65 yards down the Waverider sideline to set up a first-and-goal at the hosts six. The play was the longest reception by a tight end in Eagle history. On first down Angelo plowed through the line for a TD with 3:56 left in the quarter. Maxwell once again used his quickness to score on a two-point conversion to make it 23-0. After holding the Waveriders on downs the Eagles went on a ten-play drive using all runs by Meyer, Adam Hovsepian and Spangenberg to set up Hunter Bestard's 35-yard field goal with 3:23 remaining in the game to close out the scoring.

Defensively, despite allowing 224 yards rushing the Eagles allowed 88 on them on three fake punts meaning the defense allowed 132 yards rushing on 47 carries (an average of only 2.8 per carry). They also allowed only two completions in seven attempts for 36 yards. Kyle Aldridge picked up 12 tackles in his first start as the Eagles middle linebacker while Fred Carrera‘s seven tackles and 1.5 sacks earned him KWRM’s Defensive Player of the Game honors.
