Mater Dei - Game Notes
Welcome to Week 2 of the “Holy Wars”, also known as Serra League Football. Tonight’s game will be broadcast on Cox Cablevision as their Game of the Week. It will also be broadcast on the radio on KWRM AM 1370.
With the 25-18 loss to Loyola in Week 6 the Eagles enter the Mater Dei game at 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. Last year the Eagles began Serra League play with an 0-3 mark but still managed to make the playoffs after wins over Servite and Loyola.
The Eagles have an all-time record of 19-14-1 (.574) against teams from the Serra League dating back to 1991 including a 3-3 mark vs. Mater Dei. They are 1-0 vs. Mater Dei at “The Bowl”.
This is the 7th game between Santa Margarita and the Mater Dei Monarchs and their second meeting at the Santa Ana Bowl. Last year, – The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Mater Dei, behind Ricky Russell and James Brunt, used a ball control game plan to control the clock and post a 7-6 win over the Eagles before an overflow crowd of 7,000 at Saddleback College. In 2003, The Monarchs used a dominating running game to win 21-7 at Cal State Fullerton. In 2002, Ashton White scored two touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 19-0 shutout of arch-rival Mater Dei before 4,500 rain soaked fans at Trabuco Hills High School. In 2001, Santa Margarita used 215 yards rushing from Ashton White, forced three turnovers and recorded six sacks in soundly defeating the Mater Dei Monarchs 33-19 at the Santa Ana Bowl. In 2000, Cal State Fullerton was once again the site of one of the greatest wins in Santa Margarita history as the Eagles defeated the nationally ranked Mater Dei Monarchs 21-14. In 1999, Mater Dei Monarchs handed the Eagles their first ever shutout with a convincing 34-0 win before an estimated 17,000 fans at Edison International Field.
The Monarchs are 3-3 on the season after a 35-17 win over Servite last week. They are led by Head Coach Bruce Rollinson who is 169-44-2 (.791) in his 17th season at Mater Dei. Eagle – Monarch History (Series tied 3-3)
