Loyola - Game Notes
Welcome to the seventh season of Serra League play and the fourth with Loyola High School as a member.
With the 22-21 loss at Foothill the Eagles enter Serra League play with a 3-2 record for the second consecutive year. The Eagles won two Serra League Championships (2000 and 2001) and have posted an all-time record of 19-13-1 (.591) against teams from the Serra League dating back to 1991.
This is the fifth game between Santa Margarita and the Loyola Cubs and their third meeting at Saddleback College Last year, – The Eagles, with their backs to the wall posted one of their most impressive, and important, road victories ever as they defeated the Loyola Cubs 20-15 to secure a Division I playoff berth. QB Jon Daniels completed 18 of 35 for 236 yards for two TDs to lead the charge. In 2003, Trason Bragg rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Scott Deke passed for 124 yards and rushed for two scores himself as the Cubs wore down the Eagles and pulled out a 21-7 victory. In 2002, Cub running back Bo Renaud rushed for 140 yards and scored the games only touchdown from one yard out as the Loyola Cubs avenged their 2001 defeat at the hands of the Eagles with a 7-0 win before 3,500 at Glendale High School. In 2001, the Eagles forced three turnovers and blocked a punt, and QB Marshall Tharpe threw two touchdown passes as the Eagles registered an impressive 21-14 win over the previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Loyola Cubs at Saddleback College. The Cubs are 4-1 on the season after a 34-27 loss to Newhall Hart last week. They are led by QB Henry Burge, RB Chad Peppars and first-year coach Jeff Kearin who is 4-1 (.800) at Loyola.
Next week the Eagles travel to The Santa Ana Bowl to take on the Mater Dei Monarchs.
