2005 EAGLES

Orange Lutheran - Game Notes

The Orange Lutheran Game is the Eagle’s first home game of the 2005 campaign. The Eagles have gone 11-4-1 in their past 16 home openers and have won seven of their last eight home openers at Saddleback College. The Eagles will play only four home games in 2005.

The Eagles are ranked 4th in this week’s Orange County Sportswriters Poll and the Lancers 3rd.

In 2006, the Lancers will join JSerra in the reconfigured Serra League with Loyola and Bishop Amat moving out. Servite, Mater Dei and St. John Bosco will remain with the Eagles as members of the league which will continue to compete at the Division I level.

This match up is the 3rd meeting between the Eagles and Lancers with the series tied 1-1. Interestingly, each team’s victory was a shutout at their home field. Last year, the Eagles couldn’t capitalize on redzone opportunities while Lancer QB Blake Lucas ran for 112 yards to lead the hosts to a 19-0 win at Brea Olinda High School. In 1989, The Eagles hosted the Lancers at Saddleback College and won 42-0 behind the running of Josh Ireland (18 carries for 119 yards, 3 TDs) and the passing of Trevor Yankoff (four of 10 for 103 yards and a TD).

As of Monday September 19th, the Eagles are ranked 3rd in CIF-SS Division I, 4th in Orange County by The Orange County Register, 5th in Southern California by The Los Angeles Times, 6th in Southern California by CalHi Sports, 7th in the West by USA Today, 10th in California by CalHi Sports, and 16th in the West by Student Sports Magazine.

The Lancers are 2-0 on the season after defeating Mater Dei 27-21 two weeks ago. They are ranked first in CIF-SS Division VI and are the defending Division VI Champions after a 13-1 campaign in 2004. They are led by Head Coach Jim Kunau who is 124-30-1 (.803) in his 13 years at Orange Lutheran.
