2005 EAGLES

Kealakehe - Game Notes

The Kealakehe game marks the start of the Eagles’ 17th varsity season and their 7th in both CIF-SS Division I and as part of the highly competitive Serra League.

This interstate match up is being billed as The Kona Classic, and is the 2nd time the Eagles have traveled out of state to play a game and the first time to Hawaii.

In 1997, the nationally ranked Eagles traveled to Las Vegas in Week 2 and beat Durango High School 52-0.

Early start - This is the earliest the Eagles have ever started their season. They have never played a game in August, and in fact they have never played prior to Labor Day.

Last year, the Eagles finished 5-6 and tied for third in Serra League play. They advanced to the CIF Playoffs for the 15th time in 16 seasons, but lost to Colton 29-24 in the first round of the D-I playoffs.

The Waveriders are located in Kailua-Kona and finished the 2004 campaign 8-5. They were the 2004 Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Champions and advanced to the First Hawaiian Bank Division I State Championship tournament where they were defeated by Leilehua 28-7 in the quarterfinals. They are lead by head Coach Sam Papali’l.

The Eagles have gone 9-0-1 in their last nine season openers, and 12-3-1 overall since fielding their first varsity team in 1989. Their last opening game loss was in 1994 when they fell 17-12 at Trabuco Hills. They are also 13-3 in road openers.

After the Kealakehe game the Eagles will take three weeks off before traveling to play Dorsey at Jackie Robinson Stadium on September 16th.
