EAGLES 35 - St. John Bosco 17

BELLFLOWER, CA., October 29, 1999 – The Eagles used four touchdowns from Tyler Thompson to rebounded from their loss to Alemany to post a commanding 35-17 win over St. John Bosco. The win was both the 100th in school history as well as for Head Coach Jim Hartigan. With the win improved the Eagles to 6-2 and into a tie with Mater Dei atop the Serra League standings at 1-0, while the Braves fell to 2-6, 0-1. Santa Margarita started off red hot as they needed only three plays to go 68 yards for a 7-0 lead as Thompson burst through the left side for a 49-yard scoring run. A Derek Williams 33-yard run at the 7:21 mark of the second quarter pulled the Braves to within one, but the PAT was missed. On the ensuing kickoff, Thompson scooped up the ball at the 12 and raced 88 yards for the Eagles first kick return touchdown since 1997, and longest since 1990. A 33-yard Brave field goal at the 1:23 mark sent the teams to the locker room with the Eagles ahead 14-9. A Brave Td on their first drive put them ahead briefly at 17-14, as Chris Rix needed only three plays to find David Doomey for a 56-yard touchdown pass and a 21-17 lead that put the Eagles on top for good. Thompson's third Td from 54-yards out late in the third quarter and his fourth on a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter tied the school record for touchdowns in a game and closed out the scoring. RB Jimmy Herzog matched his season high by rushing for 161 yards on 20 carries while Thompson finished with 130 on only 10 carries. Chris Rix passed for 113 (including 84 to Doomey) and rushed for 88 more as the Eagles amassed 492 yards of offense. Defensively, the Eagles limited the Braves to only three completions on 13 attempts. Standouts included Travis Okamoto who posted a career-high 10 tackles, while Thompson recorded nine tackles, Jimmy Whithorne and Matt Vogel (eight tackles each) and Trent Zinn intercepted his second pass of the season.

Thompson's 4 TDs lift Santa Margarita

BELLFLOWER – Tyler Thompson scored four touchdowns as Santa Margarita defeated St. John Bosco, 35-17, in the Serra League opener for both schools Friday at St. John Bosco High.

The junior ran for 130 yards on 10 carries, including touchdowns of 50, 54 and 1 yards. He also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

James Herzog added 159 yards rushing on 20 carries for the Eagles (6-2, 1-0) and quarterback Chris Rix had 94.

Rix also threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to junior David Doomey in the third quarter that gave Santa Margarita a 21-17 lead it would not relinquish.

The Braves (2-6, 0-1) gouged the Santa Margarita defense for 271 yards rushing. Freshman Derek Williams led the team with 135 yards on 20 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter to bring St. John Bosco to 7-6.

Rix completed only 2 of 13 passes for 12 yards in the first half. But he settled down in the second half to finish 7 of 22 for 112 yards and a touchdown.

"We came in with a game plan and followed it a little bit," Eagles coach Jim Hartigan said. "In the second half we decided to run a little bit more. I thought both James and Tyler had great games."

It was the 100th victory in the history of the school - and Hartigan's career. When a coach pointed out he was still young and had time for a lot more wins, he replied: "But sometimes I feel a whole lot older."
