Alemany 42 - Eagles 28

MISSION HILLS, CA., October 22, 1999 – In a showcase of All-American quarterbacks it was a running back who stole the show. Junior tailback De'Andre Scott proved the Indians had more than just a passing game as he rushed for 353 yards and five touchdowns to lead the high-powered Alemany Indians to a 42-28 win over the Eagles before 4,000 at Alemany High School. The loss snapped the Eagles' four game winning streak heading into Serra League play. For the second consecutive week the Eagles had trouble stopping the opponents rushing attack as the Indians gained 396 of their 543 on the ground. Alemany, which entered the game averaging a whopping 471.8 yards per game and featuring the San Fernando Valley's top passer, scorer, receiver and arguably the best rusher, scored touchdowns on six of their first nine possessions including the first play of the game. After quickly falling behind 14-0, senior WR Donald Wilson took a handoff on a reverse and found QB Chris Rix who raced 64 yards for his first receiving touchdown. After Scott's third touchdown, the Eagles mounted a seven-play, 71-yard drive capped by a one-yard run by Jimmy Herzog (11 carries for 55 yards) with 0:40 left in the half to close the lead to 21-14. Herzog's touchdown was his 10th on the season and marked the fifth consecutive season that an Eagle had rushed for at least 10 in a season. The Indians didn't sit on their lead as they needed just two plays to cover 71 yards when All-American QB Casey Clauson found Derek Goodman on a 25-yard corner route for a score at the 0:13 mark. In the third quarter, a Dustin Creager 16-yard touchdown reception from Rix (13 of 26 for 158 yards), and a Tyler Thompson 13-yard scoring run on consecutive drives cut the Indian lead to 35-28 but it was all the Eagles could muster as they went scoreless in the fourth quarter. As a whole, the Eagles were hurt by missed tackles and poor officiating which cost the Eagles at least 10 points. Defensively, Matt Szkalak (12 tackles, ½ sack), Creager (10 tackles), Matt Vogel (9 tackles, 1 ½ sacks) and Thompson (4 tackles) stood out.

Alemany runs over Eagles

MISSION HILLS – The only time Santa Margarita stopped Alemany running back DeAndre Scott was when he wasn't on the field.

Scott, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound junior, rushed for 343 yards and five touchdowns on 31 carries Friday night to lead Alemany to a 42-28 nonleague victory over Santa Margarita at Alemany High.

"We got close a couple of times, but we just couldn't stop him," Eagles coach Jim Hartigan said.

Tennessee-bound quarterback Casey Clausen gets most of the attention at Alemany (6-1), but Scott started doing damage from his opening carry. He scored on a 62-yard burst on the first play from scrimmage and added touchdown runs of 28 and 55 yards in the first half. He had 194 yards on 16 carries by halftime.

"We were very determined to start fast because we came out so flat (in a loss to Servite) last week," Scott said.

Florida State-bound quarterback Chris Rix of Santa Margarita (5-2) had a banged-up throwing shoulder from the battle last week against Bishop Amat and played sparingly in the first half. He did catch a 64-yard touchdown pass from flanker Donald Wilson on a fake reverse.

The Eagles closed the gap to 21-14 with 40 seconds left in the first half when Jimmy Herzog capped a seven-play, 71-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

But Clausen came back with a 51-yard completion to Derek Goodman and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Goodman to give Alemany a 28-14 halftime lead.

Scott gave Alemany a 35-14 lead on a 50-yard run with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

But the Eagles didn't go quietly. Rix played the entire second half and led a 72-yard drive capped by his 16-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Creager. Santa Margarita recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Tyler Thompson's 13-yard run closed the gap to 35-28 with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.

Alemany sealed the victory with a nine-play, 80-yard drive capped by Scott's fifth touchdown run, a 1-yarder with 9:41 left.
