Carlsbad - Game Notes

This is the first game between Santa Margarita and the Carlsbad Lancers. It marks the second consecutive game the Eagles have played against a team outside of Orange County. Last week the Eagles hosted Dominguez.

This match-up marks the 5th game between the Eagles and a team from San Diego County, but the first since the Eagles beat St. Augustine 27-7 in 1996. Santa Margarita’s all time record against San Diego teams is 3-1 (.750).

The Lancers are off to a 1-0 start after a 23-21 win over St. Augustine. Carlsbad competed in the 1997 CIF playoffs despite finishing fifth in the tough Avacado League. Their key player is senior TE/DL Nick Wichowski.

The Lancers compete in Division I of the CIF-San Diego Section. This marks the first of four games in a row against Division I teams. Santa Margarita has an 11-3 (.786) all-time record against teams in the highest classifications. In fact, the Eagles have fared better against D-I teams over the years (.786) than all others (.753).

With the win over Dominguez the Eagles are now 7-3 in season opening games. They are 64-12 (.842) in seasons when the win their first game and 20-13-1 in seasons when they don’t.

QUICK FACTS
This is Santa Margarita’s 112th varsity game, and 59th home game. Santa Margarita’s all-time home record is 47-10-1 (.819), and they are 43-9-1 (.821) at Saddleback College. The Eagles are currently 85-25-1 (.770) as they enter Week 2 of their tenth varsity season. Their .770 winning percentage is the second best in State history.

The Eagles are ranked No. 4 in Orange County, No. 13 in the State (overall) and No. 2 in California Division II by Cal-Hi Sports. In 1997, the Eagles were ranked as high as 2nd, 4th and 1st respectively.

COACHES
Jim Hartigan is 85-25-1 (.770) in his tenth season as varsity Head Coach. Overall Coach Hartigan has a 101-28-2 (.775) if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He was honored as the both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the Year. The Lancers are led by fifth year coach Bob McAllister who is 32-15-1 (.677) overall at Carlsbad.
